Chapter 1611 — Heart-to-Heart
"Right, Boss, it seems Kang Zhaoming hasn't quite given up over there. A few times I've seen him trying to win people over in our procurement and quality inspection departments. It looks like he's got his eye on our analgesic formula too," Kang Xiaobo said. "Neither procurement nor QC has the detailed formula, but I'm still afraid they might leak something and let him work something out."
"Don't worry about him," Wei Zhao said coolly. "The most critical core technologies of the analgesic are in your hands and Fatty Lai's — that's all that matters. As for the rest, let him study whatever he wants. Just hope he doesn't blow himself up!"
"What?" Kang Xiaobo blinked.
"When we placed those procurement orders, didn't I tell you to include some other drugs alongside them?" Wei Zhao asked.
"You did. After purchasing, we just stored them in the warehouse without using them." Kang Xiaobo nodded. "Could it be...?"
"If he combines those drugs and tries to refine them together, they'll explode," Wei Zhao said with a smile.
"Uh... Boss, surely not? You really did plan this!" Kang Xiaobo had been thinking of warning his subordinates to watch their tongues around Kang Zhaoming, or perhaps simply firing the ones who had contact with him.
But after hearing Wei Zhao's words, Kang Xiaobo was struck with deep admiration. "So you had the foresight all along, Boss!"
"It isn't really foresight — just a coincidence. Those extra medicinal herbs I had you purchase have a low annual yield. The next drug we plan to release needs them, so we acquired them in advance. But if he mixes them with those other ingredients and tries to refine them, it's prone to exploding," Wei Zhao said.
Kang Xiaobo clicked his tongue, silently marveling at Kang Zhaoming's spectacular bad luck. The ingredients he had presumably gone to such great lengths to dig up would likely blow up in his face the moment he tried to refine them.
"Should we deliberately leak the information to him?" Kang Xiaobo asked after a moment's hesitation.
"Heh... if he sends you money, hand over the purchase order," Wei Zhao said with a laugh. "Just like last time!"
"Ha, deal!" Kang Xiaobo was delighted to have Wei Zhao's blessing. Not only could he extort a tidy sum of cash, but he could also set Kang Zhaoming up for a spectacular fall — what was not to like?
In the other room, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had finished their baths and were lying in bed, whispering to each other.
"Xiaoshu, what did it feel like, kissing Wei Zhao today?" Gu Mengyao had been itching to ask ever since it happened, but with Wei Zhao sitting right there, she hadn't dared.
"Hehe, Yao Yao jie, why don't you try it yourself and find out?" Shen Yushu said.
"I... try what? If I wanted to try, I would have done it just now." Gu Mengyao's cheeks flushed. "The very reason I'm asking you is because I'm not going to."
"Oh, actually, you were the first person to kiss Arrow Brother, Yao Yao jie — have you forgotten? You two kissed indirectly!" Shen Yushu said.
Gu Mengyao's face darkened as she recalled that farcical episode of the indirect kiss. Back then, all she had felt toward Wei Zhao was disgust and repulsion, which was why she had reacted so violently. But looking back on it now, it really wasn't such a big deal...
Wei Zhao hadn't even minded being drenched in her urine — so what was she being so squeamish about regarding his saliva? But the mere thought of that incident made Gu Mengyao blush even harder! It was, without question, the single most mortifying experience of her entire life!
"How does that one count?" Gu Mengyao coughed. "Forget it — if you won't talk about it, never mind."
"Oh, Yao Yao jie, don't get mad, I'll tell you..." Shen Yushu gazed at Gu Mengyao, whose cheeks had turned a deep crimson. "Wow, Yao Yao jie, you're blushing!"
"What nonsense! It's just hot in here!" Gu Mengyao retorted. "Are you going to tell me or not? If not, forget it."
"All right, all right, I'll tell you..." With that, Shen Yushu leaned over and planted a smacking kiss right on Gu Mengyao's lips. Then, while Gu Mengyao sat there stunned and utterly bewildered, she said triumphantly, "It's just like this — now you know, right?"
Gu Mengyao didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "How can you and Wei Zhao possibly be the same thing?"
"Hey, Yao Yao jie, you'd better go try it yourself — I really can't put it into words..." Shen Yushu dropped the teasing and said earnestly.
"Forget it, let's not talk about this." Gu Mengyao waved her hand. "Xiaoshu, do you really like Wei Zhao?"
"Oh?" Shen Yushu started playing dumb again.
"What 'oh, oh, oh'? Answer me!" Gu Mengyao demanded sharply.
"Of course I like him. Don't you like him too, Yao Yao jie?" Shen Yushu said with perfect seriousness.
"I... don't drag me into this!" Gu Mengyao said. "Right now I'm asking about you. We'll deal with my business later."
"Then yes, I do like him," Shen Yushu nodded.
"But have you ever considered that Wei Zhao already has Tang Yun around him, not to mention Feng Xiaoxiao?" This question seemed aimed at Shen Yushu, but even more at herself — it was a question Gu Mengyao had been agonizing over for a long time.
If... and it was only an if — if she hadn't rejected him so harshly back then, might she have become his girlfriend? Gu Mengyao posed the hypothetical to herself in her mind, but found no answer, because there was no "if" in what had already happened. What was past was past; an "if" served no purpose now.
"So what if there's one more person — me?" Shen Yushu didn't seem to have grasped the point at all.
"Won't you get jealous?" Gu Mengyao had no choice but to ask more plainly.
"Jealous?" Shen Yushu shook her head in puzzlement. "If I were the jealous type, how could I let you be the first wife, Yao Yao jie?"
"..." Faced with Shen Yushu's thoroughly chaotic answer, Gu Mengyao felt it was simply impossible to communicate with her. Sometimes the girl seemed sharper than anyone alive; yet other times, on any matter she had no desire to understand, no matter how you explained it, she could always steer the conversation off to something else entirely.
Sometimes, Gu Mengyao actually admired Shen Yushu for exactly this. The girl was no simple character — whatever she wanted to consider, she would consider; whatever she didn't, she wouldn't think about for even a second.
"Yao Yao jie, I actually understand everything you're saying..." Shen Yushu suddenly changed her tone, dropping her earlier playful manner as she spoke to Gu Mengyao. "But thinking too much is its own kind of suffering. Tomorrow's troubles will arrive tomorrow — why worry about what tomorrow holds? As long as today is happy, that's enough. I don't want to think about so much..."
"But... what about your future? Will it really be as you say — Tang Yun as the first wife, and you and Xiaoxiao both as second wives?" Gu Mengyao felt a little dizzy at the thought. And what, exactly, would her own position be when that day came?
"The future? That's too far away..." Shen Yushu sighed, then broke into a grin. "I'm not going to think about it — hehe..."
