Chapter 1894 — The Flower Guardian

The Blossom Guardian

"If there's nothing else, I'll be off then," Wei Zhao said.

"Goodbye. No need to see me out," Bai Lingtou replied.

Wei Zhao shrugged. Bai Lingtou really was an odd one—and odder still was the relationship between them. He had plainly saved the man's life, yet Bai Lingtou now said not a word about the past. What astonished Wei Zhao even more was the man's grasp of medicine and pharmacology; he clearly knew his business inside out!

No wonder even You Panhu held him in such respect. This obscure little specialty had hidden away a man of such caliber!

Leaving Bai Lingtou's office, Wei Zhao did not return to the classroom but went straight back to the dormitory.

"Brother Lin, what did my grandfather say to you?" Bai Weituo rushed over the moment he saw Wei Zhao come in.

"Nothing much. I recommended you for class monitor, and Wang Xinyan can take vice monitor. I don't have the time," Wei Zhao said bluntly.

"Huh? You're kidding? And then? My grandfather agreed?" Bai Weituo asked, puzzled.

"He agreed." Wei Zhao nodded.

"He actually agreed?" Bai Weituo was taken aback. Wei Zhao had saved his grandfather's life, true, but these past few days the old man had done nothing at home but grumble about how he meant to knock some sense into Wei Zhao and make the boy his prized disciple. So Bai Weituo had not been the least bit surprised that his grandfather wanted Wei Zhao as class monitor—what stunned him was that Wei Zhao had turned it down, and his grandfather had simply agreed.

"He did." Wei Zhao nodded.

"That's unbelievable." Bai Weituo was instantly astonished.

"Heh, it's fine." Wei Zhao said no more. The dormitory was crowded; familiar as they all were with one another, he was not about to spell out the truth of the matter.

"By the way, Brother Lin, are you free this afternoon?" Bai Weituo asked.

"This afternoon? Let me check." Wei Zhao remembered what the young miss had said yesterday about keeping an eye on him for Feng Xiaoxiao's sake, so he sent her a text first, lest she be displeased later.

Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu were in the economics department, which was far busier than Wei Zhao's medical specialty. The economics students had class officer campaign speeches, department student council campaign speeches, university student council campaign speeches, and more—so there was no time off at all that afternoon. Not even tomorrow!

So when Wei Zhao asked, the young miss replied promptly: her department had things going on that afternoon, so Wei Zhao could arrange his own time.

"I'm free," Wei Zhao said.

"This relative of yours really does manage a lot—you even have to ask permission to go out in the afternoon. A girlfriend couldn't be any stricter," Bai Weituo said in surprise.

"Heh..." Wei Zhao thought to himself that this was on a girlfriend's behalf, so it was about the same, wasn't it?

"Alright, since you're free, I've arranged to meet He Meiyue and her roommates. Let's all go out this afternoon! Zhao Shengji and Song Xiaodao are both from out of town and want to look around. Brother Lin, I recall you're not from Donghai City either... oh, right, you have relatives here!" Bai Weituo rattled on.

"I don't come here often," Wei Zhao said. "But He Meiyue and the others are free this afternoon too?"

"They're not running for class officer, so they have nothing to do. The afternoon is when each specialty holds its class officer elections," Bai Weituo explained.

"I see!" Wei Zhao nodded. "Then let's go out and look around?"

At one in the afternoon, in front of Building One of the biology department, Wei Zhao, Bai Weituo, Song Xiaodao, and Zhao Shengji met up with He Meiyue, Wang Xinyan, and Chai Xiaoling. As for Lan Xiaoru, she was said to be out on a date with her boyfriend and had no time.

Instead, beside He Meiyue stood two young men. One of them was talking animatedly to her when Wei Zhao and the others arrived.

"Wang Xinyan!" Wei Zhao greeted her and strode quickly over.

"See there, Fan Ganhe? Xinyan already has someone. Your chances aren't good!" He Meiyue said with a laugh to the other young man beside her.

The young man called Fan Ganhe looked at Wei Zhao with a trace of hostility. Yesterday, when he and another young man had gone to the dormitory entrance to find He Meiyue, he had seen Wang Xinyan with her and taken a liking to her on the spot. But hearing that Wang Xinyan already had someone, he was naturally unhappy.

"Fan Ganhe!" Fan Ganhe suddenly stepped in front of Wei Zhao and extended his hand.

Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback, unsure whether the fellow meant to show off or something else. Though he had been some distance away just now, he had heard clearly enough what He Meiyue said to Fan Ganhe.

"Wei Zhao." Since the other was He Meiyue's friend, there was no need to offend him. Wei Zhao extended his hand, clasped it, and said mildly.

"I'll compete for her!" Fan Ganhe did not try to provoke him through his grip, only declared his determination.

"Heh... I'm not Xinyan's boyfriend. I just know her fairly well—we come from the same place." Wei Zhao saw through Fan Ganhe's thoughts and said with a faint smile.

Fan Ganhe was startled; he had not expected Wei Zhao to say that. But he assumed Wei Zhao had deliberately backed down after seeing his build—Fan Ganhe was from the physical education department, tall and broad, clearly a size larger than Wei Zhao, who looked utterly harmless and surely no match for him!

At that thought, a flicker of contempt passed through Fan Ganhe's eyes, and even He Meiyue frowned! Her impression of Wei Zhao had been fairly good before, but now she looked down on him a little.

"Wei Zhao, don't tell me you're backing off?" He Meiyue felt indignant on Wang Xinyan's behalf.

"No, he's right. We really are just friends..." Wang Xinyan found it amusing. Wei Zhao, afraid of Fan Ganhe? That was only because they had never seen Wei Zhao in a fury. Huang Mao, formidable as he was, had been flung straight out of the classroom window by Wei Zhao!

Besides, although Wang Xinyan was not from one of the great families, she had heard a thing or two about them! Old Pi of the Xiao family had died at Wei Zhao's hands, and Pi Yangyang and Mr. Pi had been done in by Wei Zhao's underlings. If they knew that, they would not be thinking any such thing!

But Wang Xinyan did not explain further, because some things could not be spoken of carelessly.

"Is that so... then all the better. It takes a weight off my mind!" Fan Ganhe was briefly taken aback, then nodded.

He Meiyue, however, gave Wang Xinyan a rather strange look. She had formed her own preconceptions and always felt there was something between Wei Zhao and Wang Xinyan, but since both parties denied it, she naturally would not make a fuss over it.

"Meiyue, did you wait long? The men's dorm is a fair way off..." Bai Weituo smiled, breaking the awkwardness, and called out to He Meiyue.

"Meiyue, who's this?" the young man beside He Meiyue suddenly spoke up.
