Chapter 2559 — The Arrogant Company Secretary
They took the elevator upstairs, and the security guard personally led Wei Zhao to the door of the deputy general manager's office and knocked on it for him.
The door was opened by a young, pretty woman in heavy makeup, carrying herself with a certain haughtiness. Wei Zhao's brow furrowed slightly. This was Kang's secretary?
"Hm? Why is it security? Is something the matter? Since when do you bring people up without calling ahead to announce them?" The woman glanced at the guard and Wei Zhao, frowned, and asked, "You're new, aren't you? Don't you know the rules?"
"Secretary Wang, this is Mr. Wei Zhao-lin. President Lai has ruled that he may come in directly without announcement..." the guard explained with a bitter smile.
"If President Lai made the rule, go find President Lai. This is Deputy General Manager Kang's office!" The woman was plainly annoyed at the guard for throwing President Lai's name around to pressure her. But that only surprised Wei Zhao—what gave this woman such nerve? Could she really have some murky, indefinable relationship with Kang? Otherwise, why was she so puffed up, as though she were the general manager herself?
"Little Wang, what's going on out there?" Kang's voice drifted out from inside the office.
"Deputy General Manager Kang, there's a man here who says President Lai personally approved him for unrestricted access to the company." The woman spoke bluntly, and she seemed to hold no particular awe for Kang either, which only deepened Wei Zhao's suspicions.
"Oh?" Kang was briefly taken aback. He stepped out of the office, caught sight of Wei Zhao, and his puzzlement instantly turned to delight. He hurried over in a few quick strides, seized Wei Zhao's hand, and said excitedly, "Boss, you came! I never expected this—please, come in! Little Wang, there's nothing more for you here. You can go on back down."
"Oh." The woman nodded and actually turned and went into the secretary's office next door. Wei Zhao caught a glimpse of her computer—Plants vs. Zombies was running on the screen. All the more strange. An ordinary secretary, when the boss had a guest, would rush to serve tea and water; this woman was a piece of work—she simply went back to playing her game!
The guard wiped the sweat from his forehead and said to Kang, "Deputy General Manager Kang, I'll be on my way, then..."
"Very well. Thank you for your trouble!" Kang nodded to the guard.
"Kang, are you getting used to working here?" Wei Zhao sized up Kang's attire. After a few months apart, Kang looked more and more like a successful businessman, with not a trace of student left about him. Wei Zhao was pleased to see it—it seemed the path Kang had chosen back then had been the right one.
"Not bad. President Lai is away on business trips most of the time now, so the company's affairs are all in my hands. It's busy, but fulfilling! Boss, thank you for giving me this opportunity!" Kang said from the bottom of his heart.
"Ha ha, let's talk inside!" Wei Zhao gestured toward the office.
"Of course—look at me, I forgot myself. Please, come in..." Kang hastily ushered Wei Zhao into the office, seated him on the sofa, then turned to pour him some water.
That gesture only made Wei Zhao more puzzled. What exactly did that secretary do around here?
"Kang, how are things with Xiaofen?" Wei Zhao did not want to ask outright. Though the two of them were close, bringing up the relationship between Kang and his female secretary the moment they met would be too abrupt, so Wei Zhao chose a roundabout way of asking.
"Quite well!" Kang Zhaoming set the tea down in front of Wei Zhao and said, "President Lai has also built a high-end residential complex nearby as welfare housing for the employees, with fairly low internal prices. Xiaofen and I bought a unit too, and we're already living together. We plan to hold the wedding banquet next year first, and register the marriage once we're of age."
"Oh." Wei Zhao nodded. It seemed the two of them were doing well together. But that female secretary... Wei Zhao thought for a moment and said, "Kang, apart from Xiaofen, you haven't been philandering around, have you? You know, in your position..."
It was not that Wei Zhao was overstepping. If Xiaofen had no objection and Kang wanted to find a lover, that was between the two of them—Wei Zhao truly had no opinion on the matter. After all, it was their family business. But if you were going to find someone, at least find someone presentable, no? The one just now was merely passable in looks, and that makeup was truly beyond praise. This was a company, not an opera troupe—painting oneself up like that was really too much! Besides, the woman's arrogant temper and character left Wei Zhao thoroughly displeased.
"Boss, what are you talking about? Xiaofen and I are doing wonderfully—how could I possibly find someone else?" Kang was taken aback; he had not expected Wei Zhao to raise this subject out of the blue. "Honestly, Boss, if not for the help you gave me back then, I'd still be a nobody from a poor family. How could I have become a deputy general manager? Xiaofen has been with me since those days. I can't just cast her aside because I've made something of myself, can I? Besides, Xiaofen is formidable in her own right these days—she's even passed the certified public accountant exam and is now the company's deputy financial director! If I don't keep a close eye on her, there are plenty of men lining up to court her..."
Wei Zhao nodded, relieved. Kang's words sounded sincere, not like a lie. But that only made Wei Zhao more perplexed, and he could not help saying, "That secretary of yours..."
Kang was first startled by Wei Zhao's words, then understood what he meant. That earlier speech of Wei Zhao's had probably been aimed at that female secretary as well. Her attitude and way of doing things had made Wei Zhao read too much into it...
But Kang had a difficulty he could not speak of. He hesitated, then said with a bitter smile, "Her? She's a connection..."
"What? A connection?" Wei Zhao was astonished, and then at last understood why the woman carried herself with such impudence—so she was a connection! But then Wei Zhao grew puzzled again. Just how powerful a connection would it take for her to hold even Deputy General Manager Kang in such disregard?
"Yes, a connection. There's nothing I can do about it. She was placed here on the pretext of getting some experience..." Kang shook his head helplessly.
"Whose connection could be so formidable?" Wei Zhao asked. "A deputy general manager like you can't even give her orders?"
"That..." Kang truly could not say. This connection had been arranged by Tang Yun's mother, Wang Yujie, back then—a relative of Tang Yun's, curse it. In her usual vain manner, Tang's mother had bragged to the relatives that the man behind the company was her son-in-law, and this relative of hers was a vain sort as well. Thinking herself, then, a relative of the man behind the company, she became insufferably arrogant within the firm, paying hardly any heed even to Fatty Lai...
But Kang had no way to bring up the matter of Tang Yun—Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had specifically instructed him on that. Fortunately, this female secretary did not know Wei Zhao's name, and Tang's mother had not mentioned it either; otherwise, the truth might well have slipped out.
"What is it? Hard to say?" Wei Zhao frowned.
