Chapter 2621 — Wei Zhao's Promise

The Blossom Guardian

Still, now that he knew cultivators of the Heavenly Way existed, Wei Zhao could rest easy. Xuan Chen and Xiao Yi were formidable, near-invincible among Heaven-tier experts—he wondered whether he, at the peak of his late Heaven-tier days, would have had any confidence of beating them. But if he set foot on the Heavenly Way first, then dealing with them would be no trouble at all.

"Wei Zhao, there are times when you must learn to endure in silence. I am not the White Leader of years past. I cannot win you justice, and even I—thinking it over carefully today—will likely be wiped out by Xuan Chen once that plan is finished..." The White Leader was no fool. From what had happened today, he had more or less guessed at Xuan Chen's character and intentions over the years. If the Cloud-Tier Island plan truly got underway, Xuan Chen would never let him off.

"Teacher Bai, rest assured!" Wei Zhao clenched his fist, drew a deep breath, and said with resolve: "Today you shelter me. But tomorrow, I will make Xuan Chen and his lot act according to my looks."

Xuan Chen—thank you for what you did today. You have given me another reason to keep cultivating! Wei Zhao swore silently in his heart that one day he would vindicate the White Leader's lineage and make him the rightful master of the Five Luminaries Sect.

In that moment, Wei Zhao truly regarded himself as the White Leader's disciple, and the last traces of misgiving in his heart toward the man dissolved. The White Leader and those others might share a sect, but they did not share a heart. Strictly speaking, he and the White Leader were fellow disciples too.

"Heh, it seems my judgment was sharp after all—insisting on taking you as my disciple back then." The White Leader laughed, laughed with real delight. "In truth, from the moment I came here to teach, I set aside all grudges. But I could not bear to watch the foundation our ancestors built over generations be brought down by Xuan Chen. Fortunately, I have two successors!"

"Your disciple will help you clean house," Wei Zhao said mildly.

"Honestly, Wei Zhao, in all these years, this is the first time I have been this happy. My heart has come alive again—I have something to hope for. I thought I would never return to the sect in this life..." The White Leader spoke with some emotion. In truth, he had always wanted to go back—not out of greed for the master's seat, but because when his master passed the position to him, it was in the hope that he would lead the Five Luminaries Sect back to that higher plane, Cloud-Tier Island.

"Same here. To be honest, on the way over just now I was torn—terrified you might be tangled up with Xiao Yi and Xiao Shiyi. But now it seems the tie is there, only it is hatred, the same as mine," Wei Zhao said.

"I was afraid too—that you would not come, that you would go straight off to take revenge on Xiao Yi and Xiao Shiyi. If you had, I could not have saved you..." the White Leader said.

"I am not stupid. The gap in strength is too great—how could I go throw my life away?" Wei Zhao had already discovered in his earlier exchange with Xiao Yi that he was no match for the man at all. Not just Xiao Yi—even against Xiao Shiyi, Wei Zhao had no confidence of victory.

If the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth forms of the Heaven-tier martial techniques that Xiao Shiyi unleashed were as formidable as Xiao Yi's, then Wei Zhao stood no chance. And against lunatics of that caliber, he could not even dream of catching them off guard with a sneak attack.

"Good, then." The White Leader nodded, glanced at the clock on the desk, and said: "It is getting late. Let us have a meal together—master and disciple, we can talk properly. Today we have formally confirmed our bond, have we not? You will not run from it any longer?"

"Of course not." Wei Zhao shook his head. The White Leader might be a crippled man now, but with him there to overawe Xiao Yi and Xiao Shiyi, at least for the time being they would not come troubling Wei Zhao again. Having a master—it really did feel good.

"Come to my home. It happens I have another disciple for you to meet—you two can get acquainted, senior and junior." The White Leader said: "This disciple of mine is quite the cook. I will have her prepare a table of dishes, and we can eat and talk."

"Works for me!" Wei Zhao nodded. "Then I will call home."

"Good, I will make a call too." The White Leader picked up the phone on the desk, ready to call his disciple.

Wei Zhao, not wanting their calls to interfere with each other, stepped out of the office first and dialed the young lady's number. He told her he would be a guest at the White Leader's home that evening, that she should not wait up for him, and that she and Xiao Shu should go to bed first.

Meanwhile, the White Leader dialed the number for his home.

His wife answered. The White Leader said directly: "Put Xinxin on."

After a moment, a pleasant, gentle female voice came over the line: "Master, you were looking for me?"

"Yes, Xinxin. In a little while, go and prepare a table of dishes. Have your mistress go down to the supermarket and buy some more ingredients," the White Leader said.

"Ah? Are we having guests tonight?" The disciple called Xinxin was a little taken aback. The White Leader rarely had guests over to the house. Usually she cooked for three; at most, on weekends when the White Leader's son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons came home, she made more. Today was not the weekend, and the White Leader's family had not come back—so there must be a guest coming?

"Yes. I have taken another disciple—a young man of outstanding talent, a most capable fellow. It happens you two can meet and get acquainted. You are about the same age, you should get along well!" the White Leader said happily.

"Ah?" When Xinxin heard this, for some reason a faint resistance rose in her heart. The White Leader's tone—why did it sound like he was introducing her to a suitor? A young man of outstanding talent, a most capable fellow?

"Xinxin, you must bring out your very best. Once he tastes your cooking, he is sure to come over often after this!" the White Leader said.

"Oh..." Xinxin frowned to herself. Come over often? What did that mean? It really did seem like he was introducing her to someone. But the White Leader was her master, and she was too embarrassed to ask outright. Still, she resolved privately that she absolutely must not let this person become a frequent guest in their home!

In truth, the White Leader had no ulterior meaning at all! He thought highly of Wei Zhao, yes, but he was hardly so eager as to rush into matchmaking between him and his other disciple.
