Chapter 2630 — Three Things
"Not at all. Jingjing dreamed last night of going monster-hunting with Brother Wei Zhao—she slept wonderfully!" Han Jingyi seemed not in the least affected by the previous day's events. "Jingjing uploaded all those files to the cloud drive. I'll set a password on them, so even if the tablet gets stolen there's no problem, and I'm not worried about them cracking the password either—Jingjing can delete everything from any other client at any time."
"Oh..." Wei Zhao did not quite follow, but he nodded, relieved at heart. What concerned him was Han Jingyi's state of mind, and from the look of things, she had not been affected in the slightest. "Breakfast is ready. Come over and eat with us."
"All right!" Han Jingyi nodded, then went to wake her younger brother Han Xiaochao, and together they went to join Wei Zhao for breakfast.
That day, three things happened at the school. The first was that the school was to hold a charity gala—an event held every year, by which the school deliberately cultivated a spirit of compassion in its students. At the gala's auction, a variety of items would be sold: some donated by students, others by notable figures. All proceeds from the auction would be donated according to circumstance—to remote mountain regions, welfare homes, orphanages, and the like.
The recipients were chosen at random by the school, but the moment Wei Zhao heard the news, the first thought that came to him was Yu Xiaoke's orphanage! At the school's auction, students were indeed the main body, but there was no shortage of accomplished alumni and social luminaries in attendance. Their numbers might be few, but the sums they donated far outstripped those of the students!
In a provincial capital like Donghai especially, the donations from such luminaries generally started at a million, so the total funds raised at each charity gala were quite considerable. And so Wei Zhao began to scheme.
For a matter like this, Wei Zhao could only turn to Chief Bai. Given Chief Bai's special standing at the school, Wei Zhao reckoned he should be able to put in a word.
Sure enough, after receiving Wei Zhao's call, Chief Bai agreed without hesitation. "Fine, I've got it. I'll make the suggestion to the school—it shouldn't be a problem. If you were asking me to hand this money to you personally, I certainly couldn't do that, but donating it to an orphanage is naturally another matter. After all, the money was meant to go to those in need in the first place."
"Thank you, Teacher Bai." After the previous day's events, Wei Zhao's relationship with Chief Bai had grown considerably closer. Since Chief Bai had agreed to help, there should be no great difficulty.
"It's nothing, hardly a big deal." Chief Bai smiled and spoke with an air of indifference.
This move of Zhao Qibing's was something Wei Zhao had not expected. The fellow was actually coming right up to him? Was he not afraid of getting beaten?
Though Wei Zhao had heard the news, neither side made any particular move, and Wei Zhao naturally would not go out of his way to provoke trouble with them—he was quite content with the peace and quiet.
After the first class ended, Wei Zhao dialed Yu Xiaoke's number, intending to ask her about the recent state of the orphanage.
Yu Xiaoke had indeed been having a headache lately. There was a saying that hit the nail on the head: people dread becoming famous as pigs dread growing fat. The orphanage was now famous, the new grounds had been built beautifully and practically, and as a result the number of orphans had increased considerably!
Especially the sick orphans—they were being sent in an endless stream from hospitals all over the country to Yu Xiaoke's orphanage.
In truth, there was no help for it. Some poor people gave birth to children who then fell ill, and with no money for treatment, they could only ruthlessly abandon them in the hospitals. One could hardly blame these parents for being heartless—there was simply no other way!
In their eyes, if some kind soul or orphanage took the child in, perhaps the child might live; but to bring the child home without treatment was a dead end!
Yet sick orphans like these were rarely adopted. Even couples unable to bear children of their own, when they went to adopt, all chose healthy ones—who would adopt a sick infant?
And so the monthly medical expenses had now become the second-largest outlay, after the orphanage's construction and food, and it was still trending upward every day! These abandoned infants with illnesses had been sent here, and Yu Xiaoke could hardly just ignore them and refuse to treat them, could she?
If she were truly that heartless, she would not be Yu Xiaoke! So Yu Xiaoke would rather lower the food standards for the children at the orphanage than skimp on medicine to treat these little ones.
At that moment, Yu Xiaoke was studying the tasks posted by the Thieves' Gate, trying to find one to take on. She had gone over them again and again, but nothing quite suited. The ones that paid well were either too dangerous or simply unrealistic and impossible to complete, while the easy ones paid too little and wasted too much time. For the moment, Yu Xiaoke truly did not know how to choose!
It was then that Wei Zhao's call came through. Yu Xiaoke had been feeling vexed to begin with, and seeing a call from her "admirer," she was not particularly inclined to answer. But Wei Zhao was, after all, her benefactor, and it would not do to ignore him. With no other choice, Yu Xiaoke steeled herself and picked up. "Hello? Wei Zhao, you were looking for me?"
"Oh, I just wanted to ask—how has the orphanage been lately? Is the funding sufficient?" Hearing the less-than-pleasant tone in Yu Xiaoke's voice, Wei Zhao frowned slightly. What was with Yu Xiaoke? Had she swallowed gunpowder? Every time he had seen her recently, she had been like this.
"It's all right. Don't trouble yourself about the funding—I'll handle it myself!" Yu Xiaoke said coldly. "I'm getting ready to take on a task posted by the Thieves' Gate. It's fairly difficult, but if I pull it off, the payoff should come to around ten million!"
"You're taking on Thieves' Gate tasks again?" Wei Zhao was startled. He was about to say, Have you not learned your lesson from that tomb-raiding job last time? But it struck him all at once that his current identity was Wei Zhao, not the Male Thief—how could he possibly know about the tomb-raiding? Yu Xiaoke had only ever mentioned taking on tasks to him, never the specifics. So Wei Zhao hurriedly changed tack. "The tasks there are all quite difficult, aren't they? Even I would have some trouble completing them. If you go, I'm afraid you'll come out the worse for it!"
"As if it's any of your concern?" Yu Xiaoke did not know why, but the moment Wei Zhao showed her any care, she felt displeased.
