Chapter 2669 — Whose Clothes?
"All right, Mr. Lin, go on ahead," Yu Dake said, though his mind was still turning over what Wei Zhao had said earlier. What did he mean, it would be fine even if her body cheated with Male Thief? That he didn't care?
Did he really not care? Was it that he cared so much about Yu Xiaoke that such things no longer mattered to him, or that he did not care about Yu Xiaoke at all and meant to treat her as a plaything? The more Yu Dake thought, the more tangled he became—even more tangled than Yu Xiaoke herself!
Had Wei Zhao known how much this would torment him, he would never have teased him. Care or not care, Wei Zhao was not about to put a green hat on his own head—except that others did not know what Wei Zhao himself knew: was there really any difference between Wei Zhao and Male Thief?
Wei Zhao got out of the car and entered the villa he had not seen for so long. Gazing at the familiar scenes within, he was overcome with emotion. He went upstairs to the room belonging to Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu—a place that had once been forbidden ground to Wei Zhao, though at some point it had been opened to him, and now he came and went there as easily as walking on flat ground.
Fetching a suitcase, Wei Zhao packed the winter clothes of Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu into it. But the two of them had far too many clothes, so he could only select some according to his own judgment. Once their clothes were packed, he went downstairs and came to his own room.
Wei Zhao had few clothes indeed—only a padded leather jacket that Uncle Qing had bought for him when he first arrived. This was his first winter here, and he had bought nothing for himself, so it was a simple matter. He opened the wardrobe and took out the padded jacket, placing it on top of everything in the suitcase.
Only, as he pulled out the jacket, a somewhat tattered school uniform came out of the wardrobe with it!
"Huh?" Wei Zhao picked up the torn uniform in puzzlement, with not the faintest recollection of it. When had he ever thrown a tattered school uniform into his wardrobe? And why keep this ragged thing here instead of discarding it?
Yet when Wei Zhao picked it up and examined it closely, he discovered that this uniform was in fact a girl's uniform!
Could it be Yaoyao's or Xiaoshu's? But what would either of them mean by leaving a uniform here? Or had he put it there himself? Did he have some collector's habit for school uniforms? Wei Zhao was utterly baffled and could not for the life of him work out where this uniform had come from!
Since he could not recall its origin, Wei Zhao did not dare throw it away carelessly. He simply put it back in the wardrobe, intending to ask Yaoyao and Xiaoshu when he returned whether they knew where it had come from.
The uniform was put away, but a familiar scent lingered on his hands, coming from that uniform—though Wei Zhao felt it was not the scent of the young lady or Xiaoshu. Even if the two of them wore perfume, it would not be this scent.
As for Wang Xinyan... Wei Zhao reflected that back in high school he could hardly have had the chance to get his hands on Wang Xinyan's uniform, could he?
And Feng Xiaoxiao? She seemed never to have worn a uniform at all! Back then she had been one of the four great troublemakers of the campus, and she never wore a uniform to school.
He shook his head. Since he could not figure it out for the moment, Wei Zhao stopped trying. He finished packing his things, left the villa, loaded the suitcase into the trunk, got into the car, and headed back toward East Sea City.
Yu Dake left that very night after returning, going back to the Hidden Right Clan. He and Wei Zhao exchanged contact information, agreeing to get in touch when there was time. He was deeply sorry that he had been unable to help Yu Xiaoke, yet there was nothing to be done—on one side stood his benefactor, on the other his sister, and he could not force matters either way.
Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had not yet gone to bed. Seeing Wei Zhao return, the young lady, who had been watching cartoons on the sofa, rose and came to meet him. Taking the large suitcase from his hands, she said, "Wei Zhao, you're back. Thank you for going to the trouble."
"Ha ha, it was no trouble," Wei Zhao said with a smile. "The leather jacket on top is mine; everything beneath it is clothes for you and Xiaoshu... Oh, yes, one thing—there's a torn girl's school uniform in my wardrobe. Is it either of yours?"
"Huh?" Gu Mengyao was taken aback, thoroughly bewildered. "What girl's school uniform?"
"The uniform from our First High School, only it's been torn to shreds—as if someone had deliberately kept it as a keepsake?" Wei Zhao said.
"A keepsake of yours?" Gu Mengyao grew even more puzzled, sizing Wei Zhao up and down. She did not think Wei Zhao had any such habit of collecting other people's uniforms.
"I don't know whether it was me. I have no memory of it..." Wei Zhao was simply curious. It was no great matter, really, only he felt a compulsion to get to the bottom of it and find out the truth.
"Then..." Chen Mengyao was about to say more when she looked up and saw that Shen Yushu had somehow slipped around behind Wei Zhao and was desperately winking at her. Gu Mengyao gave a start as a possibility occurred to her, and she hastily changed her tune: "Oh, that must be my uniform—I threw it in there before you moved into the villa!"
"Yours?" Wei Zhao looked at the suddenly enlightened Gu Mengyao with some doubt. "Yours... but if it was torn up, why didn't you throw it away?"
"Oh, it was a uniform I was rather fond of, so I kept it," Gu Mengyao said.
"You? Fond of a school uniform?" Wei Zhao found it even stranger. Since when was the young lady fond of school uniforms? And keeping it even after it was torn to rags? With Gu Pengzhan's position as chairman of First High School, she could have as many uniforms as she wanted—why would she keep a tattered one?
"Oh, Arrowbrand Bro, what's with you today? Why are you fixating on a school uniform? What's so astonishing about that?" Shen Yushu rushed out to stir up trouble. "Oh, Xiaoshu gets it—is Arrowbrand Bro planning to secretly take the uniform and jerk off with it, and just wants to confirm the target of his fantasies?"
"Pff..." Wei Zhao flushed at Shen Yushu's words, and at once recalled the time when he had first come to the villa and been "caught in the act" by Shen Yushu. He coughed twice and had to admit that he was being a little absurd today—what was the point of investigating a tattered school uniform?
Yet the uniform seemed to possess some magic, branded so deeply into Wei Zhao's mind that he could not help but want to get to the bottom of it! In truth, this was one drawback of the Forgetfulness Herb potion: although after drinking the potion blended with Tang Yun's fresh blood Wei Zhao had forgotten Tang Yun and all things connected with her, events could be forgotten while objects remained. If he happened to see an object from the past, he would feel a sense of déjà vu, throwing his memories into confusion.
