The Empress and Yuanmu shared a single body, bound fast by this dao chain, and the tremendous tidal force bearing down upon them had nearly crushed that shared body in two! Yet both knew that Shen Mu was saving them.
Had the chain not bound them, the tides would surely have swept them into the great calamity of the Sixteenth Universe's destruction, reducing them to ashes. The tides grew fiercer and fiercer, tearing at their bodies; whether Shen Mu, the Empress, or Yuanmu, all their mortal flesh began to split apart.
They were, one might say, the mightiest beings in the world today; throughout the whole universe, those who could be their match could be counted on one hand. Yet even beings of such strength could hardly withstand this power.
"The red rope! " Madam Yuanmu suddenly cried out.
"Look up, quickly!
The red rope!
" The Empress and Shen Mu started. With effort they turned their heads upward and indeed saw that at the end of this dao chain, several red ropes were tied fast to it.
Those red ropes were impossibly slender, utterly ordinary in appearance, yet they held the dao chain fast, withstanding the tearing of a being as powerful as the Second Young Master of Miluo Palace, withstanding the tides and the gravity of the Great Abyss of Guixu, and even enduring the great calamity of the Sixteenth Universe's destruction! Stranger still, all around the red ropes the scene appeared calm and still, utterly without peril, as if the power of the great calamity and of Guixu, upon reaching that place, was suppressed by some invisible force. "The tides born of the universe's destruction are too strong!
" Her Majesty the Empress shouted herself hoarse, bellowing down at Shen Mu. "We cannot hold out long in these tides. We must reach the red ropes if we are to survive!
" Shen Mu at once began to move with difficulty toward them.
His body and primordial spirit were torn and battered by the terrible tides. Amid the tides, the Unchanging Divine Power no longer worked, for the tides were too violent: the instant his body was broken, his flesh and blood were swept away howling in the current, and even the Unchanging Divine Power could not reclaim what had already fled.
What was more, the tides tore his body open, and the power of the tides reduced his flesh and blood to pure energy.
Had it been Ling Tianzun's Mass-Energy Immutability, his body could still have been kept whole, but Ling Tianzun had not had time to pass on the Mass-Energy Immutability she had comprehended over forty thousand years to Shen Mu before Shen Mu was seized and carried off by Hao Tianzun. For now, Shen Mu could only rouse the Divine Power of Creation, using the Way of Creation to make his body and his ruptured primordial spirit endlessly repair themselves. His Way of Creation was exceedingly formidable, but the Divine Power of Creation consumed his cultivation of mana; sooner or later the tides would wear away all his cultivation and take his life! He could also rouse the Divine Power of Reincarnation, yet he could not hold out long that way either.
The Great Abyss of Guixu was one of the few perilous places capable of putting him to death.
At last Shen Mu reached the side of the Empress and her sister. With a difficult shake of the dao chain, the Empress's body came free, and was at once caught up by the tides, hurtling howling upward! Shen Mu reached out a hand; the Empress seized it at once, swung lightly, drew near the dao chain, and hooked one slender leg around it.
They climbed upward along the dao chain, their bodies and primordial spirits endlessly swept into fragments by the tides. These tides were more than a hundred times fiercer than those of the Great Abyss of Guixu in their own universe.
Shen Mu could not withstand them; neither could the Empress. Fortunately, their cultivation was tremendously deep, and they could still hold out for a time.
Like two tiny ants upon the chain, they struggled upward.
