Chapter 963 — Blood Falls Like Rain in the Cold Night
The Herdsman of the Wasteland Page 2 of 2
He gripped a long whip of flame and cracked it out with a snap, coiling it around the neck of a charging monster; with a sharp tug the soul within flew out and was caught in the whip.
The whip retracted and lashed the white banner, and another contorted soul appeared within it.
The eye at the center of Shen Mu's brow opened, firelight shooting forward like a pillar, and the soul of another charging Taixu monster was scattered to nothing beneath its glare.
A monster rushed at his back; Shen Mu lifted a hoof and kicked it square in the brow, the Youdu demonic fire blazing beneath his sole and burning that monster's soul to ash.
Another monster charged up behind him, only for the tail at Shen Mu's rear to lock around its throat, hoisting it into the air head-down and slamming it down hard.
The monster was slammed senseless; as it tried to roll over and rise, Shen Mu's other ox-hoof came down on its brow, and its head burst with a pop.
Monstrous birds wheeled in the sky, shrieking as they swooped down, talons reaching; before they could land, the two horns of Tubo on Shen Mu's head blazed with light and fire, becoming two nine-winding Yellow Springs that locked the bird fast and burned it alive into a bird of fire, screeching without end.
Then out of nowhere a monster slammed hard into him; cracking sounds came from Shen Mu's chest as countless bones broke, and he tumbled and rolled into a palace, punching through it, then through another palace of the Creators, toppling one huge pillar after another before he finally stopped.
His Tubo body was broken, and he at once returned to his true form, swiftly rousing the Arcane Scripture of Flawless Creation to repair the damage to his flesh.
Ahead came boom upon boom; the monster that had knocked him flying crushed two great halls and came chasing after his trail, and just as it seemed about to slam into him again, Shen Mu abruptly seemed to melt, clinging to the ground and flowing as a black shadow, racing away. The monster was stunned for a moment, then went madly chasing after his shadow.
Luo Wushuang was using vital essence as blades to cut down monsters, but his strength fell short of his will; stealing glances around, he saw that everyone in the city was now in peril, some dead, some wounded. Even disciples of Heavenly Venerables, true deities who had comprehended the cultivation art of the Lesser Heavenly Court, could hardly withstand an assault like this. Suddenly another scream rang out—a true deity torn to pieces!
And after that true deity died, its soul drifted; the next moment flesh and blood madly sprouted around the soul, and it swiftly became a Taixu monster that charged at the others, recognizing neither kin nor friend!
Moreover, Luo Wushuang found that even when the monsters they killed were shattered or burned to ash, their bodies would swiftly be restored and they would resume the slaughter. Only by scattering their souls could they be truly killed.
And against monsters in such dense numbers, scattering their souls was no easy thing, for there were too many monsters and too many attacks—there was simply no chance for it!
"It seems I have no choice but to draw out the core of the Primeval Wood.
Even if it costs me my heavenly palace and scatters my soul, I must stake everything on one fight!
" Luo Wushuang clenched his teeth and was about to draw the core of the Primeval Wood from his brow when a black shadow suddenly swam to his feet.
The shadow rose straight up, swayed, and became Shen Mu; he reached out, drew the Primeval Wood core from Luo Wushuang's brow, and shook it in the wind, whereupon it swelled at once.
A staff some ten feet long appeared in Shen Mu's hand, and Shen Mu breathed upon it: "Grow—" The staff touched the ground and surged up at once!
Boom!
Only a thunderous roar reached Luo Wushuang's ears as Shen Mu pulled him up; looking down, he saw a horrifying sight.
That core of the Primeval Wood had become an immeasurably thick giant pillar stretching from one end of the Creators' city to the other, eight hundred li long.
The pillar lay across the heart of the city, its diameter fully a thousand zhang, crushing countless monsters to powder!
The Creators' palaces and other buildings along its path were all razed to the ground. The two of them fell downward, while overhead countless monstrous birds beat their bone wings, the hollow bones spouting flame, flying at tremendous speed.
Shen Mu brought Luo Wushuang down, and the Primeval Wood core grew smaller and smaller, soon becoming a wooden needle that fell into Shen Mu's hand.
Shen Mu casually thrust it into Luo Wushuang's brow, and the Primeval Wood core at once ran through Luo Wushuang's heavenly palace, continuing to channel medicinal power to heal the damage to his heavenly palace.
Luo Wushuang gave a muffled grunt; when the core had first been planted in his brow he had felt no fear, but now that he had seen the might of this little wooden needle, a touch of retrospective dread crept over him: "Aren't you afraid that one slip and you'll crush my heavenly palace flat too.
.
.
" The two raced forward along the road the Primeval Wood core had crushed out, trying to break out of the city, but the monsters just flattened all rebuilt their flesh and blood and rose again.
Not only that, the palaces and buildings the core had destroyed also swiftly restored themselves, blocking their way.
Shen Mu frowned, reached out and drew the Primeval Wood core from Luo Wushuang's brow once more.
Luo Wushuang was already numb to it, and leaped up with him.
Boom.
The Primeval Wood core showed its might again, flattening the monsters that had climbed to their feet once more. The two landed, and Shen Mu put away the Primeval Wood core and thrust it back into Luo Wushuang's brow.
