Chapter 1733 — I Have Someone in My Heart!

The Blossom Guardian

"All right, you know about this now and that's enough. Don't bring it up again. I'm waiting for my master to come and heal my leg. When he does, you know what to say, don't you?" Zhao Qibing asked.

"I know, Young Master Bing. I've taken all of this on my own shoulders — none of it will touch you. You're an innocent victim in all this," Li Cihua said at once, his expression turning grave.

"Mm, good." Zhao Qibing nodded in satisfaction.

Wei Zhao rang the doorbell. The address was the one Xiaoken had given him, though he had no way of knowing whether it was right — none of the residential buildings in this neighborhood had numbers, and he had only found the place by asking his way along the road.

Presently Yu Xiaoke's voice came from within. "Who is it?"

"It's me. Wei Zhao," Wei Zhao said.

"Wei Zhao?" The door swung open on the heels of Yu Xiaoke's puzzled echo, and she stared at him in astonishment. "Why are you here? And how did you find this place?"

Small wonder she was so surprised. Yu Xiaoke had never told Wei Zhao about the orphanage, and even if he had learned of the fire from the television news, there was no way he could have tracked the place down.

"Brother Wei Zhao, you came!" Xiaoken came running out of the house, and he was all warmth at the sight of Wei Zhao.

"Xiaoken, was it you who told him?" Yu Xiaoke was no fool. Seeing the easy familiarity between Xiaoken and Wei Zhao, she had her guess.

"Sister Xiaoke... I..." Caught out, Xiaoken grew rather sheepish. "I only mentioned it in passing, and Brother Wei Zhao was so kind as to come and help..."

"Mentioned it in passing? And he came just like that?" Yu Xiaoke was not about to believe that. She glared at Xiaoken. "Tell me the truth — was it you who called Wei Zhao here to help?"

"Fine, I did. But... Brother Wei Zhao isn't exactly an outsider, is he!" Xiaoken muttered, hanging his head.

"Not an outsider?" Yu Xiaoke's eyes went wide. "Don't tell me he's from the orphanage?"

"Isn't he your boyfriend, Sister Xiaoke... I figured... I'd just let him come..." Xiaoken said warily.

"He... I..." Yu Xiaoke flushed to the ears in her fluster. She wanted to say that Wei Zhao was hardly her boyfriend — but to say so to his face would wound his pride, and after all he had come to help. How could she bring herself to say such a thing?

"Ha, don't blame him — I came of my own accord," Wei Zhao said, well aware of how she felt and unbothered by it. "This time I've brought you some money, to take the edge off your troubles at least. I hear rebuilding the orphanage will cost a great deal. For now I have only eight million, but start building — make it a modern orphanage, with every facility planned out properly. As for the funds to follow, I'll find a way for you."

"Wow, Brother Wei Zhao, you're the best — this couldn't have come at a better time!" Xiaoken had not imagined Wei Zhao would produce eight million on the spot, and that it was only the initial funding, with more to come — he was beside himself with excitement. He too was all in favor of building a larger orphanage, one that could take in more abandoned infants and street children.

"Eight million?" Yu Xiaoke stared at Wei Zhao in amazement. She could not work it out — why would Wei Zhao suddenly send the orphanage eight million? From what she knew of him, he was not that sort of person, surely?

Could it really be as Xiaoken said, that Wei Zhao had misunderstood something? But didn't Wei Zhao already have a girlfriend? Was he still setting his sights on her?

The old director of the orphanage, delighted as she was by Wei Zhao's timely succor, had her own doubts about his motives. She knew nothing of the Man-Thief business, and simply assumed Wei Zhao truly had some connection with Yu Xiaoke.

"The money's already been transferred to the donation account you told me about last time," Wei Zhao said. "You can check — it should have arrived."

"Wei Zhao, you... come with me a moment..." Yu Xiaoke bit her lip, resolved to have it out with Wei Zhao. She could not simply take advantage of him in such an unexplained fashion. She did not like him, and some things had to be made clear — otherwise, if she let him go on misunderstanding, how would she ever repay him?

If the Man-Thief were not already in her heart, she could at worst do as the saying went, and repay a debt of kindness with her body. But her heart belonged to someone now, and Yu Xiaoke did not want to wrong the Man-Thief. That was why she meant to speak plainly with Wei Zhao.

"Oh?" Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback. He truly had no ulterior design — he simply wanted to do something for the orphanage.

Yu Xiaoke's conduct in the face of those thieves, and in the ancient tomb, had moved Wei Zhao deeply, and that alone was why he was willing to do her this service. He wanted nothing in return — otherwise, would it not have been simpler to send the money as the Man-Thief?

That way Yu Xiaoke might even have offered herself to him in gratitude, but that had never been his intention.

Still, seeing that Yu Xiaoke had already turned and gone out the door, Wei Zhao had no choice but to follow quickly after her.

Out in the corridor, Yu Xiaoke shut the door behind them and did not stop until she reached the turn of the stairwell.

"What exactly is this about?" Wei Zhao asked, eyeing her strangely.

"You... do you like me? Are you trying to win me over?" Yu Xiaoke glared at him, lowered her voice, and asked between her teeth.

"What?" Wei Zhao started. "Me, like you? Win you over? What on earth are you talking about?"

"Isn't that it? Then why would you send us money for no reason at all?" Yu Xiaoke was puzzled by his reaction, though she did not quite believe he was acting out of pure goodwill. To her mind, no one was so eager to please without some crooked design.

The two of them were hardly close. If it came to that first donation, Wei Zhao and the others had already been more than generous — there was no need at all to send money now. And this time he had given far more than the total of the previous donation, which could not but make Yu Xiaoke suspicious.

To tell the truth, if Wei Zhao had not come to know Yu Xiaoke more deeply in the ancient tomb, he would never have troubled himself to send her money at all.

"It was Xiaoken, saying you were in dire straits..." Wei Zhao said with a wry smile. "What did you think it was? Aren't you reading too much into this?"

"I... I thought you had some ulterior motive... I have someone in my heart, and he's a hundred times, a thousand times better than you — so if you had any other purpose, don't even think about it!" Having said her piece, Yu Xiaoke let out a breath as if a great weight had lifted from her.

"..." Wei Zhao was speechless. Your sweetheart is a hundred times, a thousand times better than me? Is that an insult, or are you telling me I've got a split personality? He was torn between laughing and crying. "I know you have someone in your heart. And with those clumsy, third-rate skills of yours, I wouldn't have you anyway!"
