Chapter 1876 — Strange Behavior, Part Two
"Ah? Pay by card? You're not even going to look at the house?" The agent's clerk stared at her, dumbfounded.
"No need. I'll take this villa — it's quite close to the one they bought earlier, isn't it?" the beautiful girl asked.
"Yes..." The clerk nodded woodenly.
"Good. If it can be done, then let's handle the paperwork now..." The beautiful girl produced a bank card — one of those black diamond cards, the kind issued only to those holding at least five million in deposits.
At the sight of that card, the last shred of doubt in the clerk's heart melted away. He sighed inwardly: what on earth is going on today?
A moment ago he had been envying his colleague for selling a villa, and now he had turned around and sold one himself? Wasn't that a bit too much of a coincidence?
Wei Zhao brought Gu Mengyao to the villa district of the Xueshang residential compound, and found that although the surroundings were not so elegant as the Seaview Bay villa district back in Songshan City, it was still a high-grade community; not all of it was villas, but the other buildings were in the Western-style house manner as well, and quite charming.
The Xueshang compound — as the name suggests, a residential area built specifically for the merchants who did business near the university town, and likewise a compound sold to people of means. It was utterly unlike the districts where students rented rooms: the property fees here were steep, but the compound itself was orderly, with plenty of parking spaces and clean, tidy roads; the villa district in particular was quiet and lovely.
So Gu Mengyao and Xiaoshu had taken one look and fallen for the place. Wei Zhao said nothing more; he simply signed the contract with the owner, paid by card, and completed the transfer of title.
And with that, the villa became property under Wei Zhao's name.
In the afternoon, Wei Zhao drove Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu to the supermarket for a few necessities, and once they were back the four of them set about a thorough cleaning; the villa had stood empty for a long while and was thick with dust, so there was no doing without it.
The villa, however, was simply too large. Over the following day the four of them scarcely paused, and only then was the place cleaned through. And the third day was the day the freshmen of Donghai Engineering University were to register.
Early that morning, Wei Zhao drove Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu to Donghai Engineering University.
It being a public university, its students came from rich and poor alike; arriving at school by car was nothing remarkable. Wei Zhao's Grand Cherokee, though far from cheap, was unassuming in appearance, and did not draw the eye the way a Mercedes, a BMW, or a Ferrari would.
He parked in the school's public lot, and the three of them took their admission letters and identification to the freshman registration reception desk.
The lot was crowded with freshmen's parents. Beside Wei Zhao's car, several of them were proudly comparing their children's college entrance exam scores; those with the highest scores wore a look of open superiority.
But in truth, that sort of thing lasted only a moment. Once at university, everything was utterly different from high school and middle school.
In middle school and high school, the measure was grades; at university, though grades still mattered, personal ability also carried great weight.
Employment does not hinge on good grades alone — personal ability and practical experience matter a great deal. Students who have reached their senior year and begun job-hunting know this all too well: given identical credentials, a hiring company will not pore over every grade in every course of every semester; it cares far more about how the individual performs in the actual interview.
Of course, all this was far too remote for the freshmen who had only just enrolled.
Those who could get into Donghai Engineering University were the pride of their respective schools; the admission cutoff here was high, and crossing this university's threshold was a thing to be proud of.
Not far off stood the freshman registration information desk set up by the student council, directing freshmen of each major to register with their respective departments.
Since Wei Zhao, Gu Mengyao, and Shen Yushu were enrolled in two different majors, Wei Zhao decided to accompany the two girls to register first, and afterward go register in that "pharmaceutical major" of his own.
But when Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu asked where the economics department registered, two young men came over and asked, with the friendliest of airs, "You two must be new students — off to the economics department? Shall we show you the way?"
Every year during freshman registration, there were always sophomores and juniors who came to loiter about the information desk; after all, at a science and engineering institution the ratio of men to women was badly skewed, and pretty girls were scarcer still. So when these loiterers caught sight of Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu, their eyes fairly glowed green.
But the two who had appeared now were both from the physical education department. One was named Li Biaohan, president of the boxing club; the other was called Zhuang Niaodao, who belonged to no club at all, but whose background was a mystery and whose skills were formidable — even the presidents of the martial arts club and the taekwondo club yielded to him a little, and only this Li Biaohan could stand against him. Though rumor had it that it was not Li Biaohan's skill that made the match, but that his background was much like Zhuang Niaodao's.
Naturally, judged purely by personal strength, these two were formidable as well.
So whichever girl they set their eyes on first, the rest could only give her up in despair; and though the two were notorious womanizers, no one dared say a word about it.
Looking at Li Biaohan and Zhuang Niaodao before her, Gu Mengyao's eyes took on a wary light.
"No need. We can find it ourselves," Gu Mengyao said.
"Haha, this campus is huge — it's perfectly normal for a freshman to get lost. Let us take you!" Li Biaohan and Zhuang Niaodao were in perfect accord: there were two pretty girls, after all, one apiece, just right, and no need to squabble.
"I get it — you want to hit on us!" Reading their eyes, Shen Yushu guessed their intent at once and shouted, "Brother Arrow, somebody here wants to hit on me and Sister Yao!"
Wei Zhao had just gotten the registration map for the "pharmaceutical major"; when he turned around he saw that Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had been stopped by two young men. His brows knitted at once, and hearing Shen Yushu's cry, he too guessed what the two had in mind.
He had heard before that the ratio of men to women at science and engineering institutions was unbalanced, but surely these two needn't be quite so desperate?
Seeing Wei Zhao come over, Shen Yushu said smugly, "We've got an escort, so we don't need you two!"
Li Biaohan and Zhuang Niaodao frowned. They had not expected these two pretty girls to be already spoken for, but seeing that Wei Zhao was only one man, they were still unwilling to give up.
"So which of these two is your girlfriend?" Zhuang Niaodao asked, not quite ready to let it go. Bullying as he was by nature, he still could not bring himself to openly poach another man's girl; but doing it quietly behind the scenes, that was another matter. For now, at least, appearances had to be kept.
So if Wei Zhao took one away, one would still be left, and whoever could win her would depend on his own and Li Biaohan's abilities.
