Chapter 2164 — A New Name

The Blossom Guardian

Wei Zhao found it rather amusing. This Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast—all defiance and grievance toward everyone else—had turned meek as a lapdog the moment it stood before General Mighty and the Heavenly Thunder Pig. Truly, one thing always has another to subdue it.

"Broken Dog, think you'll go barking off at random again?" Shen Yushu demanded, hands on her hips, looking at the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast with open satisfaction.

"Roooar, roooar..." The Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast gave a foolish grin, though inwardly it was displeased. The name "Broken Dog" was simply too ugly—couldn't they pick something a little nicer? But it could not speak so as to be understood, and could only look pleadingly at the Heavenly Thunder Pig and General Mighty.

The Heavenly Thunder Pig, however, could understand the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast's words. It raised a claw and wrote a few characters in the soil of the courtyard: The name is ugly.

"Ugly, is it..." Shen Yushu had to agree that "Broken Dog" was a bit ugly. She had only called it that on purpose earlier, when it had been strutting about so arrogantly. Now that the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast had submitted, Shen Yushu naturally would not hold it against it.

"It is called the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast—a bit long. Why not call it Little Wind from now on?" Wei Zhao suggested.

"Little Wind? That's a good name." Shen Yushu nodded, then gave the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast a kick. "How about we call you Little Wind—works for you?"

"Roooar, roooar!" The Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast nodded hurriedly. This name was better than Broken Dog by no one knew how many times over—how could it object? And by now it had also seen clearly: to live here in the future, it would have to keep a low profile and do as told. At the Qianshan Sect it had been the overlord, a spirit beast kept in worship. But here, any spirit beast one called out at random outranked it—it was nothing more than a lowly underling!

Yet this only strengthened the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast's resolve to follow Wei Zhao. With its intelligence and discernment, how could it fail to see? That General Mighty was nothing but an ordinary dog, not of ancient spirit-beast blood at all—and yet it had been forced into becoming a "counterfeit ancient spirit beast." If the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast still could not recognize Wei Zhao's power, then all its years of living would have been wasted!

All these signs pointed to one thing: Wei Zhao possessed great divine powers. If he could turn an ordinary dog into an ancient spirit beast, then helping it level up would be effortless. And back in the cage at the trial grounds, the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast had already come to feel this deeply!

"Arrow-Brand Brother, this Little Wind looks kind of dumb—so big and not a bit of fun. Not nearly as cute as General Mighty and the Heavenly Thunder Pig!" Shen Yushu glanced at the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast with some distaste.

"Roooar, roooar, roooar..." The Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast hastened to defend itself.

The Heavenly Thunder Pig translated on the ground: It says that once it levels up to the early Earth rank, it can change the size of its body at will!

Wei Zhao looked at the characters on the ground, somewhat surprised. The Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast had such an ability? Yet Wei Zhao had no intention of helping it level up right now. After all, this was a spirit beast he had only just taken in; he had to observe its conduct for a time, to see whether it truly submitted.

Just like that lion back then—docile enough on the surface, yet always harboring ulterior motives. Wei Zhao had never helped it raise its strength. And this Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast, too, he meant to test. After all, this creature had already betrayed the Qianshan Sect once—could it betray him, Wei Zhao, a second time?

The Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast was not like General Mighty and the Heavenly Thunder Pig. General Mighty was a known quantity—it had risked its life to protect Gu Mengyao back then, which showed its loyalty plainly. And the Heavenly Thunder Pig was Zhang Liju's personal spirit beast; since Zhang Liju had died and Wei Zhao had inherited his mantle, the Heavenly Thunder Pig had come along with him, and there was no chance it would betray him and go elsewhere.

"I'll observe you for a while first, see what your character is like, whether you truly submit to me—then I'll consider whether to raise your strength, and by how much!" Wei Zhao said, glancing at the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast.

"Roooar, roooar!" The Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast nodded hurriedly. It understood too that Wei Zhao could not possibly raise its strength right now; everything had its process. General Mighty and the Heavenly Thunder Pig had presumably followed Wei Zhao for a long time already, while it had only just arrived. If it did not prove itself, how could Wei Zhao treat it well?

So it was in no hurry. With its intelligence, it could fully grasp that Wei Zhao surely did not trust it yet. To win his trust, it must first get on good terms with General Mighty and the Heavenly Thunder Pig, learn Wei Zhao's temperament through them—and only then could it get Wei Zhao to help it level up.

"General Mighty, take it to the back courtyard and let it settle in for now," Wei Zhao instructed General Mighty. In the villa's back courtyard, Wei Zhao had built a dwelling for the spirit beasts; at present General Mighty and the Heavenly Thunder Pig both lived there. Adding the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast, there was still room, though it would be a bit crowded. Wei Zhao planned to expand it when he had time, but for now he would let them make do.

"Woof, woof!" General Mighty barked twice in acknowledgment and led the Wind-Thunder Violet-Lightning Beast and the Heavenly Thunder Pig back to the rear courtyard.

"Yaoyao, Xiaoshu, let's head back too," Wei Zhao said.

"Mm." Gu Mengyao had a thousand things she wanted to ask Wei Zhao about this trip—whether he had run into trouble—but the words reached her lips and would not come out. She gave a faint smile, turned, and walked into the villa.

Shen Yushu, for her part, clung to Wei Zhao without letup: "Arrow-Brand Brother, besides that Little Wind, is there anything else you want to give Xiaoshu?"

"Xiaoshu, Yaoyao, this time I did indeed bring back two things for you." As he spoke, Wei Zhao opened the leather case and took out the Poison-Avoiding Pearl and the Antidote Pill. "This is the Poison-Avoiding Pearl—it can serve as a poison test. Most poisons can be detected with it: just place it in food suspected of being poisoned, and it will change color. The more toxic the poison, the deeper the color!"

"Ah, this thing is fun—now we won't have to worry about someone poisoning me and Sister Yaoyao." Shen Yushu took the Poison-Avoiding Pearl and toyed with it with great interest.

"The other is the Antidote Pill. This one Antidote Pill can counter most poisons—unless it is some highly unnatural toxin, it will neutralize any poison with ease!" Wei Zhao said. "The Poison-Avoiding Pearl is useful, certainly, but if you run into something like that Seven-Herb Death Powder we encountered in the dining hall before, it is of no use—because none of the seven herbs is poisonous on its own; only mixed together do they become toxic. Unless you mix them together first and then test with the Pearl, you could never detect the poison. And in that kind of situation, the Antidote Pill shows its worth: if you accidentally ingest the poison, you can use this to cure it."
