Chapter 3466 — Guan Xin's Blind Date
Still, on festivals and holidays, they had kept in frequent touch by phone.
"Sister-in-law Yuxi, how are things going? Can the leader's disciple go ahead and get betrothed to our Xinxin?" Guan Xiaoxiang had been in a foul temper these past weeks. Guan Xin was plainly already promised in marriage, yet she was still tangled up with Wei Zhao!
It was not that he thought Wei Zhao a bad sort; it was that Guan Xiaoxiang was a man who kept his word. That benefactor had helped him so greatly back then—how could he casually break the promise he had made?
To his mind, a promise was worth more than anything. The benefactor had since gone off to attend to some important matter, but that did not mean that once he had left, the agreement could be torn up at will. Guan Xiaoxiang was not that kind of man!
"Yes, it's all settled on my end. We're only waiting on you now," Shen Yuxi said. "I've already booked my flight; I should reach Songshan City the day after tomorrow. My disciple will arrive as well. You know the place—you pick a hotel, and I'll have him come to you."
"Good, good, no problem!" Guan Xiaoxiang breathed a sigh of relief. In his mind, once this matter was set in stone, he would no longer have to fret over Guan Xin's feelings. It would be a done deal, and she could object all she liked to no avail.
He knew that, though Guan Xin sometimes threw little tantrums, when it came to matters of right and wrong she would still save him a little face. So no sooner had Guan Xiaoxiang hung up than he set about making the arrangements...
When Guan Xin took her father's call she was somewhat helpless, but she knew this moment had to come sooner or later, so she had no choice but to agree. She had her plan all worked out anyway—she had gone online and ordered a whole non-mainstream getup and an arsenal of cosmetics.
On the morning of the blind date, Guan Xiaoxiang had booked the finest hotel in Songshan City—the Starlight Splendor Hotel.
Guan Xin was not foolish enough to walk out of the house dressed in her non-mainstream outfit. That day she wore a perfectly normal casual suit. It was not much adorned, but Guan Xiaoxiang was well pleased with the clean, crisp look of her.
That was the style he liked, and besides, that man's disciple was sure to be a capable sort with a keen eye. The more painstakingly one decked oneself out, the worse it compared to a return to plainness. So Guan Xiaoxiang, well satisfied, brought Guan Xin along to the Starlight Splendor.
When they entered the private room, Shen Yuxi and her disciple had not yet arrived. Guan Xiaoxiang had come a little early—as the host, he could hardly wait for the guests to arrive before he did; that would have been impolite.
"Dad, I'm just going to the washroom to touch up my makeup and check that everything's in order," Guan Xin said, rising. The private room had its own washroom, so it was convenient for her to change.
"All right, go ahead!" Guan Xiaoxiang was delighted. He took it that Guan Xin had come round now that she had agreed to the match, and was preparing to give the other party the best possible impression—otherwise why would she be so attentive?
Little did he know that no sooner had Guan Xin reached the washroom than she began to change. The outfit could not exactly be called revealing, but outlandish it certainly was!
Then Guan Xin began doing her makeup and dyeing her hair. She had specially bought an instant hair-dye spray online.
Guan Xin did not usually go in much for dressing up, but she had nonetheless practiced at home for a long while. With all this done up, she had become a regular little punk girl!
Only when all of this was finished did Guan Xin call Wei Zhao.
"Wei Zhao, where are you?" Guan Xin asked anxiously. "My dad's already brought me to the Starlight Splendor for the blind date. We're in the Xiyuan Hall on the third floor. When are you coming over?"
Guan Xiaoxiang had chosen the Xiyuan Hall for the meeting with a purpose in mind—so that they would cherish this destined encounter.
"I'm already on my way. I'll be there soon," Wei Zhao said. "I'll have a surprise for you in a bit!"
"Mm... I've got a surprise for you too!" Guan Xin's getup today was truly a bit over the top—even she barely recognized herself!
The surprise Wei Zhao meant was that she would discover her blind date was none other than Wei Zhao himself. And Guan Xin's surprise was that she thought her own disguise had come off spectacularly well.
Wei Zhao and Shen Yuxi had not come together; the two had split up. Shen Yuxi had arrived in Songshan City the night before and was staying at the Starlight Splendor as well—she need only come downstairs.
So it was that not long after Guan Xiaoxiang arrived, Shen Yuxi came into the private room.
"Sister-in-law Yuxi, how do you do! It's been years, and you're as lovely as ever! No wonder Brother Yang was so smitten back in the day!" Guan Xiaoxiang rose hurriedly and greeted Shen Yuxi like an old friend.
Shen Yuxi flushed slightly. She knew Guan Xiaoxiang was only being polite. That she was lovely was true enough, but as for Yang Ming being smitten—that was hardly the case. Back then, it was she who had pursued Yang Ming!
Thinking back on those days, Shen Yuxi felt a little embarrassed too. She shot Guan Xiaoxiang a glare and said, "There are younger ones present—mind what you say!"
"All right, all right, I'll say no more..." At Shen Yuxi's mention of the younger one, Guan Xiaoxiang remembered that Guan Xin was still in the washroom. She had been in there so long—why had she not come out? Suddenly anxious, he called toward the washroom, "Xinxin, how are you doing in there? Auntie Shen is here—hurry out!"
"Dad, I'm coming out... I'm just having a cigarette in the washroom!" Guan Xin said from inside. "My craving hit me, and I was afraid of smoking Auntie Shen out!"
As she spoke, Guan Xin took from her bag a prop cigarette she had bought online. It was made to look exactly like the real thing; a pull on it produced clouds of smoke, yet it contained not a trace of tobacco—it was, at bottom, a television prop.
"What?!" Guan Xiaoxiang's expression changed at once, and he froze. Smoking? Guan Xin, smoking? When had she ever smoked? From childhood to now, Guan Xin had been a model child, never touching tobacco or drink. Could it be that in this recent spell of studying medical knowledge, she had taken up smoking?
No, that couldn't be right either. That man was a highly respected professor at a university in Donghai—how could he possibly have taught Guan Xin to smoke?
Shen Yuxi was taken aback as well. All she had known of Guan Xin had come one-sidedly, through Guan Xiaoxiang. But today, on arriving, she heard that Guan Xin was smoking—which truly shocked Shen Yuxi to the core!
She stared incredulously toward the washroom. So far as she could recall, Wei Zhao did not seem to smoke either, did he? If Guan Xin smoked, that would indeed make things difficult—would Wei Zhao dislike her for it? But had he not said they had known each other before? RS
