Chapter 1728 — Sending Flowers
"An Jianwen? After the An family got their noses bloodied at the Great Clan Gathering, they want to treat you to dinner? They're not hoping to cozy up to Brother Arrowbrand, are they?" Shen Yushu had seen the An family's departure from the Great Clan Gathering, so this sudden dinner invitation struck her as rather odd.
"I really don't know. Daddy said it was just a visit between business partners and old friends, and he didn't mention anything else..." Gu Mengyao shook her head.
"Whatever the case, we'll go take a look tonight and see," Wei Zhao said. "If it's just a dinner invitation, then we eat. As for anything else, we'll see when we get there."
Soon enough, Gu Pengzhan called again, and the restaurant was settled — a comprehensive buffet with fine cuisine from every country, and of course, the prices were anything but cheap.
At five that evening, Wei Zhao drove Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu, and Tang Yun to the agreed-upon restaurant. After parking the car, the four of them went inside together.
An Mingyue, An Jianwen, and Gu Pengzhan had already arrived and were waiting in the lounge on the first floor. Seeing Wei Zhao and the others come in, Gu Pengzhan waved them over.
"Yaoyao, a few days apart and you've gotten even prettier!" An Jianwen smiled and, from somewhere, produced a bouquet of fresh flowers, holding it out before Gu Mengyao.
"Is that so? I haven't been resting well these past few days, my complexion's terrible — you ought to get yourself a pair of glasses." Gu Mengyao was utterly unmoved by An Jianwen's praise, and paid no attention whatsoever to the flowers he held out.
An Jianwen looked a little awkward. He didn't understand why Gu Mengyao simply didn't like him. When they were small, hadn't they gotten along quite pleasantly? How was it that now, grown up, they had drifted so far apart? It seemed he didn't understand Gu Mengyao at all anymore.
In fact, if he had thought about it from another angle — he didn't understand Gu Mengyao, but then, had Gu Mengyao ever understood him? How could she possibly know about the things he did in secret?
"Ha, Yaoyao, you're quite the joker. But even with a poor complexion, you're just as beautiful!" An Jianwen laughed and raised the flowers in his hand. "Flowers for a beauty — these are for you!"
"Give them to Wei Zhao," Gu Mengyao said, with no intention of taking the flowers.
"Huh?" An Jianwen was taken aback. What would he give flowers to Wei Zhao for? He wasn't into that sort of thing.
But before he could react, the flowers in An Jianwen's hand had already ended up in Wei Zhao's! Wei Zhao casually split the bouquet into three and gave one portion each to Tang Yun, Gu Mengyao, and Shen Yushu. "These are for you!"
"Thank you!" Gu Mengyao happily accepted Wei Zhao's flowers, and Tang Yun and Shen Yushu gladly took theirs as well.
An Jianwen was grinding his teeth in fury, yet there was nothing he could do but say, "Let's go. I heard Xiaoshu wanted steak, so I specifically booked this buffet — the steaks here are very authentic, and there are all sorts of snacks from around the world!"
As they entered the restaurant, An Jianwen swiped his card. Seven people dining came to more than twenty thousand yuan, which showed the prices here were by no means low — no worse than those high-end hotels. And that didn't even include drinks; if one wanted red wine or the like, that was charged separately!
The restaurant was very large, and there weren't many customers, but the atmosphere was extremely elegant. There were private little booths, small enclosed rooms, and a bar, leaving guests free to choose as they pleased.
"Old friend, the two of us have done business together for years, but it's been a long time since we've sat down so leisurely and had a drink together!" An Mingyue laughed. "Let's the two of us take one table, and let the children take another, so we don't disturb each other."
The An family's behavior this time rather astonished Wei Zhao. The two of them seemed not in the least embarrassed about the Great Clan Gathering, as if the name of a great clan really meant nothing to the An family — and as if this dinner really was just a reunion with Gu Pengzhan!
Because father and son, to this moment, had shown not the slightest intention of currying favor with Wei Zhao!
That let Wei Zhao breathe a sigh of relief, and yet it also left him somewhat puzzled! Wei Zhao had been afraid that An Mingyue would use Gu Pengzhan to plead the An family's case, hoping to join the **[**'s Association — and if Gu Pengzhan really did speak up, Wei Zhao would have a hard time refusing!
But now that worry was gone. Still, the two men's behavior left Wei Zhao feeling rather strange! Could it be that An Mingyue and An Jianwen truly didn't care about the name of a great clan? Or did they have some other backing?
As he was pondering this, An Jianwen said with a smile to the group, "Let's sit over here, so we don't disturb the elders' conversation!"
With that, An Jianwen pointed to a rather large open booth not far away.
It was a six-person booth — that is, only three people could sit on each side. And An Jianwen's arrangement was undoubtedly an attempt to sit side by side at the same table with Gu Mengyao! After all, Wei Zhao and Tang Yun were a couple and couldn't be split up, so one of Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu would inevitably have to sit beside him!
But in his view, Shen Yushu would either sit beside Wei Zhao or beside Gu Mengyao — she would absolutely never sit alone next to An Jianwen.
Gu Mengyao naturally understood An Jianwen's thinking. It was just that in this restaurant, the tables were either for four or for six; if there were more people, one would have to choose a small private room. But Gu Pengzhan and An Mingyue weren't sitting with them, and it wouldn't be proper for them to take a private room, so the six-person booth was the best choice.
Only, when they reached the booth, Gu Mengyao said, "How about us girls sit on one side, and you boys sit on the other?"
Wei Zhao didn't mind, but An Jianwen was furious. He had finally come up with a good idea, and just like that it was ruined. But at this point he couldn't object — objecting would make it seem as though he had some improper motive.
"That works too. Where we sit doesn't matter — the point is to eat. The food here is good, with snacks from all over the world, all very authentic. I happened to come here once before, so I'll be your guide!" An Jianwen said, picking up a plate with great gallantry.
"An Jianwen, your An family doesn't seem to have been affected?" Wei Zhao finally couldn't help asking, because An Jianwen gave him too strange a feeling! Families like the Kang family were breaking their necks trying to join the ranks of the great clans, yet the An family seemed to have no such intention at all.
"Heh heh, Wei Zhao, one thing is one thing. We may have our little conflicts and misunderstandings, but right now I'm the host — I'm treating Yaoyao and her family to dinner. For my sake, at least, let's not bring these things up for now." An Jianwen smiled with great ease.
