Chapter 1826 — Home
As for Tang Yun, the matter of giving the Herb of Forgetfulness potion to Wei Zhao had moved Old Man Wei and Mo Kongwen, those two old fellows, to the depths of their hearts. This girl had gone to such lengths for the one she loved—no small thing at all!
"In that case, then do as Yun-yun wishes: keep this matter forever a secret, buried deep in your hearts, and do not let Little Yi find out!" Old Man Wei shook his head gently and sighed. "Otherwise, her painstaking devotion will have been in vain, and when that time comes, both of them will be in utter agony..."
Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu both nodded at this. Yes—Tang Yun had not taken the Herb of Forgetfulness potion, and when ** came, she would surely be in unbearable pain, perhaps even in danger of losing herself to madness; and Wei Zhao, if he learned of this and saw Tang Yun at last ** with the Heartless Art complete and a heart of ice, would only suffer the more!
The only way to satisfy both sides was to let Wei Zhao never learn of this matter for as long as he lived. It might seem unfair to Tang Yun and to Wei Zhao alike, but some things left no choice.
"You have been away so long—your school term must be starting soon, no?" asked Old Man Wei.
"Not yet. We applied to Donghai Engineering University, and the freshmen don't start until October," said Gu Mengyao. "Of course, if we don't get in, that's another matter altogether..."
"That's good, then." Though Gu Mengyao said so, Old Man Wei naturally gave no thought to whether she might fail. For one thing, her grades spoke for themselves, and her estimated score had come in well above the cutoff; and even if she had failed, with Gu Pengzhan's influence she could still have attended. "But by my reckoning, the time is about right—shouldn't you two be heading back?"
"Yes. We came back here to take the Mighty General and the Thunder Pig with us, and to say goodbye to you..." Gu Mengyao's voice carried a touch of sorrow. "Grandpa Lin, the next time we have a holiday and some free time, we will surely come back to see you!"
"Whether you come to see me, that hardly matters. But when you have the time, slip away and go visit Yun-yun without telling Little Yi—she will be so happy to see you," Old Man Wei instructed.
"Mm, we will, definitely!" Gu Mengyao nodded.
"Well, enough talk. Rest here tonight, and set out on the road tomorrow," said Old Man Wei.
"All right. We'll go say goodbye to Ergoudan too. And—Grandpa Lin, could you leave us your contact information?" said Gu Mengyao. Wei Zhao had had Old Man Wei's phone number before, so Gu Mengyao had never written it down; if Wei Zhao did not wake in the coming days, they might well need to trouble Old Man Wei.
"It's in Little Yi's phone. I'll go fetch it for you!" said Old Man Wei.
When he left, Wei Zhao had not taken his phone, nor had he turned it on. It had been left in his room.
This was Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu's last night in West Star Mountain Village. Though they had traveled a long and weary road, neither of them felt much drowsiness. Standing in the familiar courtyard, they seemed to drift back to the night they had first arrived in West Star Mountain Village, when they had hidden beneath the fence wall and eavesdropped on Wei Zhao and Tang Yun's whispered words...
Those scenes seemed to hover right before their eyes, and yet so very far away. The place was the same; the people were not.
"Xiao Shu, let's get some rest. We have to rise early and be on the road tomorrow..." With a sigh, Gu Mengyao took Xiao Shu's hand and walked toward the room.
"Yao-yao, is there any chance that in the future we could still live together with Sister Yun-yun?" asked Shen Yushu.
"Maybe there is, maybe there isn't... Who can say what the future holds?" At this, Gu Mengyao suddenly smiled faintly. "You are the Prophet Shu, and you don't even know—and yet you come asking me?"
"Prophet Shu is not all-knowing Shu..." Shen Yushu murmured to herself, and followed Gu Mengyao back into the room.
Yet if Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had been a little more attentive, they would have noticed that tonight they had become the main attraction—and the eavesdroppers had become Old Man Wei and Mo Kongwen!
"Earlier you said that someone would be sacrificed—that was Tang Yun, staying behind in the Snow Valley, correct?" asked Old Man Wei.
"More or less. Some things cannot be divined in any great detail, and this is also the best possible outcome," said Mo Kongwen.
"Old friend, it's time you were going too, isn't it?" asked Old Man Wei.
"Yes. With matters settled, I should be getting back," said Mo Kongwen.
"The mental cultivation method he left behind—have you still not fully comprehended it?" asked Old Man Wei.
"How could it be comprehended so easily?" Mo Kongwen smiled bitterly. "You know as well as I do that the spiritual energy of heaven and earth is thin here... Apart from Little Yi's jade pendant—and I never went to that place back then—to break through is easier said than done."
"True enough. Let us strive together, then. I think that to leave West Star Mountain Village, I too must take that step..." Old Man Wei sighed.
On the road, Gu Mengyao wanted to contact her father, to tell him that she and Xiao Shu had returned and that Wei Zhao was out of danger, so that he could set his mind at ease. But Gu Pengzhan's phone would not connect, which struck Gu Mengyao as rather strange!
When it had failed to connect before, Gu Mengyao had thought nothing of it, assuming her father was in a meeting or in the underground parking garage with no signal. But days had passed, and once more the call to Gu Pengzhan brought only the message that the phone was off; and when she tried again a few hours later, it was still off. This began to make Gu Mengyao anxious.
So Gu Mengyao called Uncle Qing directly—and this time it connected on the first try.
"Miss Gu..." Uncle Qing answered quickly, though his voice sounded somewhat low. "Is that you?"
"It's me, Uncle Qing. What's the matter? Your voice sounds hoarse—are you ill?" Gu Mengyao was slightly taken aback, but paid it little mind and simply asked, "Where is my daddy? Why is his phone off?"
"Mr. Gu, he..." Uncle Qing hesitated. Thinking of Gu Mengyao out there all alone, he feared that telling her the bad news of Gu Pengzhan's car accident might disturb her peace of mind—and if in her alarm she ran into trouble, it would be one disaster upon another!
So Uncle Qing said, "He has been very busy these past few days, all caught up in that big project... Miss Gu, is something the matter?"
