Chapter 1881 — Don't Be Fooled
"Pfft... cough, cough..." Bai Weituo burst out laughing. "How could that be? I meant couples going at it in the water..."
But no sooner had he said it than he remembered there was a girl present, and talk like that was hardly appropriate.
Sure enough, Wang Xinyan turned away, blushing, pretending she hadn't heard.
"..." Wei Zhao was left speechless, at a loss for what to say. People said university couples were uninhibited, but surely not to that extent?
He walked Wang Xinyan all the way to the entrance of her dormitory building, and stopped before the matron at the door could even open her mouth.
All the freshman girls' dorms were in this one building, so the matron was the same as before.
"This is as far as I go. I can't get in..." Wei Zhao said, pointing to the notice inside the lobby.
"Mm!" Wang Xinyan nodded, took the luggage from his hands, and smiled. "Thank you."
"Mm, see you around." Wei Zhao nodded, and he and Bai Weituo left the girls' dormitory. Since men weren't allowed to linger here, the two of them naturally couldn't stay long.
But once Wei Zhao had gone, Wang Xinyan was stopped by the matron.
"?" Wang Xinyan blinked. "Is something the matter? I'm a freshman here..."
"Nothing's wrong. I just wanted to give you a word of warning—that young man who walked you over here just now, he came by earlier with two pretty girls. From how close they were, one of them looked to be his girlfriend. Don't let him fool you!" the matron said, her tone grave and heartfelt.
"Ah?" Wang Xinyan froze.
"I've been the head of this dormitory for years, and I've seen far too many girls come away from love badly hurt and disappointed. Ai, I'm only giving you a word of warning—how you handle it is up to you!" the matron said.
"...Thank you..." Wang Xinyan didn't know what to say. She knew perfectly well that Wei Zhao had a girlfriend—they had even eaten together back in Yanjing. But what did any of that have to do with her? The matron had clearly mistaken the nature of her relationship with Wei Zhao.
Still, Wang Xinyan didn't bother to explain. She nodded to the matron, gave a faint smile, and went upstairs.
Watching Wang Xinyan's indifferent manner, the matron sighed softly. It was plain the girl hadn't taken her warning to heart. It wasn't that the matron was a busybody; it was just that the sight of heartbroken girls, day after day, looking so utterly lost, truly pained her, and she wanted to warn them in advance. But how many ever really listened?
Once they were out of the women's dormitory area, Bai Weituo looked rather excited. "Brother Lin, that Wang Xinyan—she's the girl you like, isn't she?"
"Uh... why do you ask?" Wei Zhao was taken aback.
"Just a feeling. The two of you seem kind of special—like there's a little something between you, though the window paper hasn't been torn through yet," Bai Weituo analyzed.
"Stop guessing. There's nothing going on," Wei Zhao said, shaking his head. Still, he had to admit there did seem to be a certain unspoken understanding between him and Wang Xinyan—a peculiar kind of fate.
"Heh heh..." Bai Weituo grinned slyly.
Wei Zhao was somewhat exasperated. The boy was young in years but old in cunning; from the way he talked about such things, it was clear he'd probably sneaked peeks at the swimming pool—far too precocious for his age. "Do you have a girlfriend?"
But the moment Wei Zhao brought it up, Bai Weituo's face fell. "No, don't even mention it. Grandfather kept too strict an eye on me—I was right under his nose, so how could I possibly have a girlfriend? But now that I'm at university, I'm finally free. I'm definitely going to land myself a pretty girl!"
"I wish you success," Wei Zhao said, unsure what else to say.
"Haha, it's all up in the air for now. I saw that our major had finally gotten itself a beauty, but since she's Brother Lin's dish, I can only give up and look elsewhere. Though searching other departments isn't bad either—I hear the economics department has plenty of girls, heh heh... I'll see if I know anyone there, maybe set up a dorm mixer..." Bai Weituo clearly knew a great deal about university life and spoke of it with great authority.
Wei Zhao thought to mention that he knew some friends in the economics department, but seeing the lecherous look on the boy's face, he somehow didn't want him to see Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu—what if the little wretch went after them?
And yet Wei Zhao found his own selfishness rather strange.
Led by Bai Weituo, Wei Zhao arrived at the men's dormitory—a newly built residence hall that smelled of fresh construction from top to bottom.
"What do you think? Not bad, eh? Brother Lin, our year's freshmen got lucky. This building is brand new—the desks, chairs, and beds inside are all new, and the rooms are spotless, not like the dorms the seniors vacate, some of which are so filthy they're hardly fit to look at," Bai Weituo said.
"It can't be that exaggerated," Wei Zhao said in surprise.
"Then you underestimate these people's capacity for making a mess!" Bai Weituo said. "I've seen plenty around here—there's all sorts in a big forest. Last year there was a guy who was too lazy to go to the toilet in the middle of the night, so he just pissed against the wall by their door. And the rest of the room were all slobs too—they copied him one after another, all pissing behind the door. And guess how it turned out?"
"How did it turn out?" Wei Zhao asked.
"By the time they graduated, the wall behind the door was covered in moss. After they left, the cleaner responsible for the dorms thought the room had been converted from a toilet—there were even wood ear mushrooms growing out of the wooden door!" Bai Weituo said.
"Uh... that exaggerated?" Wei Zhao wondered—mushrooms actually growing there? Did the people in that room pick them regularly and cook with them?
"It's a bit exaggerated, but it's not far off!" Bai Weituo nodded.
The two of them went upstairs and arrived at the door of Room 444. Wei Zhao looked at the room number and said, "This room number is pretty badass!"
"Boss, you're not superstitious, are you?" Bai Weituo asked. "If you don't like it, you can still switch—but the rooms for our medical and pharmaceutical department only start at 440 on the fourth floor, so whatever you switch to will still start with 44, unless you room with students from another department..."
"It's fine, I like it," Wei Zhao said indifferently, taking out his key card and opening the door.
The two stepped inside. No other students had arrived at the room yet.
"Boss, our two beds are on this side—one by the window, one by the door. Which do you want?" Bai Weituo asked, pointing to the beds.
It was a four-person room, with the beds and desks built together—the beds above the desks, the standard setup of a modern university dormitory.
