Chapter 1882 — Three Roommates

The Blossom Guardian

"Then I'm choosing—I want the one by the door. Easier to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night!" Bai Weituo said.

"And how many steps does that save?" Wei Zhao was astonished. The two beds stood right next to each other; even at a walk it was a matter of seconds.

"Heh heh, give it a while and you'll understand. The dorm looks empty now, but soon the floor will be buried in junk and folding drying racks. In the pitch dark, anyone without a bit of cultivation who wants to cross this room without bruising a shin needs real technique—and the power's cut at night, no lights..." Bai Weituo said. "Brother Lin, there's still time to change your mind!"

"It's fine. I'll take the one by the window, then—better view." Wei Zhao said indifferently.

As for having no lights at night, that hardly mattered. So long as there was the faintest glimmer, seeing clearly was no trouble at all for Wei Zhao.

Bai Weituo, though, was rich in experience. Wei Zhao had heard that plenty of college students arrived on campus and fought tooth and nail over the window beds, thinking of the sunshine and the scenery—only to discover before the first semester was out that the floor was awash in clutter and the door was far too far away. A genuine trap...

The two of them got their beds sorted out. Before long the dorm door was pushed open and in walked a plump, round thing wearing thick glasses, looking every inch the dull, bookish pedant.

"Is this 444... the dorm for the pharmacy major?" the plump one asked, catching sight of Wei Zhao and Bai Weituo in the room.

"That's right, brother, you've come to the right place—this is it!" Bai Weituo went over and said warmly to the plump one, "Let me introduce myself. I'm Bai Weituo, also pharmacy. This is my elder brother, Wei Zhao. We're all roommates from here on out!"

"Ah, hello. I'm Zhao Shengji!" the plump one hastily introduced himself. "I was sure I'd be mixed in with some other major. I never expected you'd all be kindred spirits!"

"Ugh, a major that can't even muster a few dozen people—might as well cancel it," Bai Weituo said. "Why'd you apply for this one?"

"Oh, my family grows medicinal herbs. I saw this major and it lined up perfectly with the family business, so I signed up," Zhao Shengji said. "Though... the main reason is that I've been around herbs since I was small, so my fundamentals are solid, and this major's easy to coast through—I'll graduate without any trouble! To be honest with you, I'm actually here on my own dime..."

"Ha, with those glasses on I took you for a top student, the hard-to-get-along-with type!" The moment Bai Weituo heard Zhao Shengji's words, he knew this fellow was nothing of the sort.

"Hah, top student my foot..." Zhao Shengji shook his head. "These eyes of mine are from reading novels. Lately I've been on a great one, Immortal Pill God. Do you fellows read novels?"

"Sure do—but surely not enough to wreck your eyes like that? I like Very Pure and Ambiguous: The Prequel," Bai Weituo said.

"Ah, it's a long story. There's no power out at our herb garden at night, so I read by candlelight..." Zhao Shengji said, a shade regretful.

"..." Bai Weituo and Wei Zhao were left momentarily speechless, both thinking: couldn't you read during the day, or on a phone? But looking at his woebegone state, they kept it to themselves.

Mid-conversation, another male student came into the dorm. This one was handsome and elegant, standing tall and graceful as a jade tree in the wind—though with a faintly effeminate air. Hearing Wei Zhao and the others discussing novels, he whooshed over, slapped his leg, and cried out, "Kindred spirits! I read them too! Lately it's War God Transformation—excellent stuff!"

Wei Zhao, Bai Weituo, and Zhao Shengji stared at this creature who had come dashing out of nowhere, rather baffled.

"Uh... let me introduce myself. I'm Song Xiaodao, also in this dorm..." the young man said, scratching his scalp somewhat sheepishly.

Seeing Song Xiaodao like this, Bai Weituo breathed a sigh of relief. The thing a college dorm feared most was running into the hard-to-get-along-with sort. You lived there four years; no one would be happy stuck with someone who didn't fit in.

But Zhao Shengji and Song Xiaodao both seemed easygoing, and Wei Zhao was hardly a stiff, hidebound type either. Bai Weituo counted himself lucky.

"We don't report to the department until tomorrow, so there's nothing to do today. From now on we brothers are all in the same trench. How about we go out and grab a bite? My treat!" Bai Weituo said, thumping his chest.

"Ha, fantastic. Eating's my favorite thing." Zhao Shengji patted his round belly and said.

"Sure—but let me, your brother, do the treating. I'm the last one here, so I'm the newcomer!" Song Xiaodao said.

"No need to argue. There'll be plenty of chances—one meal each!" Wei Zhao laughed. He had no objection to this fine college life; on the contrary, he found it genuine and joyful. Meeting a few friends and good brothers was a wonderful thing.

Ever since the pharmaceutical company had gotten busy, and Kang Xiaobo had learned a thing or two about him, their relationship hadn't changed—yet they could never recapture the feeling of their school days. You could say Kang Xiaobo had matured, grown up, taken on responsibility, but he had lost that lighthearted feeling of young people together.

And Wei Zhao had drifted too long; he wanted to return to that natural, warm kind of life. But in Songshan City he had been swept up in far more complicated factions and schemes. Now he had come to Donghai City, starting over from scratch, and he had thought about living a plain college life for a while.

"Now that's the spirit!" Song Xiaodao slapped his thigh. "Fine, next time it's on me!"

The four of them locked the door and, led by Bai Weituo, headed for the school's No. 4 cafeteria. Wei Zhao took out his phone and hesitated—he wanted to call Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu and have them come eat with them, but his new friends were still strangers to him, and it was Bai Weituo's treat; inviting them along didn't seem quite right. Besides, their own dormmates would probably be going out to eat too, wouldn't they?

Sure enough, before Wei Zhao could dial, a text message arrived—from the eldest young lady, telling him that she and her dorm sisters had only just met and were going out for a meal, so he would have to sort out his own dinner.

"Brother Lin, were you thinking of inviting Wang Xinyan along?" Seeing Wei Zhao take out his phone, Bai Weituo assumed that was his intent, and said, "Then have her come. We're all in the same major anyway... same class, really—our major only has one class!"

"What's this? What's this?" Song Xiaodao leaned in, glanced at Wei Zhao, and said, "Is there something going on here?"
