Chapter 1883 — The Mixer Dorm
"No way? Moving that fast?" Song Xiaodao said, pounding his chest and stamping his feet. "I heard ages ago this major's short on girls—and now you've gone and claimed one of the few resources before anyone else!"
"How can you be so lacking in ambition? Can't you set your sights a little further? So narrow-minded—isn't the whole school enough for you to choose from?" Bai Weituo said. "You still think this is high school, where every class is its own little world? College has entered the era of the big lecture hall—people from different majors, even different colleges, all end up sitting in class together!"
"Uh... fair point!" Song Xiaodao nodded.
"Brother Lin, come on, make the call!" Bai Weituo urged. "Best if she brings her roommates along too—we'll set up a mixer between the dorms. As long as they show up, I'm paying!"
"Right, brother, call her, quick—we're all counting on you!" Song Xiaodao said eagerly. Clearly that last line of Bai Weituo's had landed somewhere deep.
"Then... I'll give it a try," Wei Zhao said with a wry smile. It seemed there was no getting out of it; everyone was so eager, and he couldn't bear to spoil the mood. So he dialed Wang Xinyan's number.
The call connected quickly, and Wang Xinyan's voice came through: "Wei Zhao? Is something the matter?"
"Mm, are you free right now? Want to come out and eat with us?" Wei Zhao asked.
"Now? You're asking me out to dinner?" Wang Xinyan was briefly stunned, her face warming a little. For some reason she felt a small flutter of nerves.
She'd heard before that college was a paradise for romance, but Wang Xinyan's marriage had already been settled by her family, so she had never paid much attention to such things. Yet this call from Wei Zhao stirred in her a strange, unfamiliar feeling.
"Uh... it's like this. Bai Weituo said he wants to arrange a dorm mixer, and he was hoping you could help—invite all the sisters in your room over. He's treating!" Wei Zhao explained, afraid she might get the wrong idea.
"Oh, so that's it..." Wang Xinyan breathed a sigh of relief, and yet, without quite realizing it, a faint disappointment crept in too—though only for an instant, so fleeting she didn't even notice it herself. "I'll try... we were just about to go out for something to eat anyway..."
"Then I'll wait for your good news," Wei Zhao said. "We're at Cafeteria No. 4."
"Okay." Wang Xinyan hung up.
"I did my best. Whether they come or not, I can't say." Wei Zhao spread his hands.
"Should be about right, no?" Bai Weituo said. "We're all freshmen—a little mixer can't hurt!"
Cafeteria No. 4 was doing the briskest business it had seen all day. With the new term starting, plenty of dorm-mates were gathering here for meals—though of course, some who found the place beneath them, or too far beneath them, headed off campus to restaurants instead.
In short, Cafeteria No. 4 was that comfortable middle tier: a cut above the snack stalls off campus, but a step below the big restaurants.
The four of them walked in, found a slightly larger table, and sat down. A waiter came over to take their order.
"Hold on a moment—there are four more coming!" Bai Weituo told the waiter.
The waiter nodded and went off to see to the other tables.
A while later, Wang Xinyan called back. Wei Zhao picked up—it was her.
"Xinyan, how'd it go?" Wei Zhao had naturally dropped her surname. Not that he did it on purpose; they were old acquaintances, and using her full name would have felt distant.
Wang Xinyan was slightly taken aback—she hadn't expected him to call her that. But her roommates were all watching from the side, so she couldn't say much. She only said, "We talked it over, and they all agreed. Where are you?" "Cafeteria No. 4. Bring them over and you'll spot us—we're on the first floor," Wei Zhao said.
"All right, then wait for us." Wang Xinyan nodded.
"Done!" Wei Zhao hung up and announced it to the four wolves of his dorm, who were eyeing him hungrily.
"Ha, Brother Lin, I knew there was something special between you and Wang Xinyan!" Bai Weituo said excitedly.
"Heh..." Wei Zhao didn't bother to argue. Sometimes the more you argue a thing, the less anyone believes you.
Before long, Wang Xinyan arrived at Cafeteria No. 4 with three other girls. Of the four, the most eye-catching wasn't Wang Xinyan but another girl—though Wei Zhao could tell at a glance that this girl's looks owed everything to makeup and clothes, while Wang Xinyan hadn't even put on light makeup, fresh and pure as she was.
If Wang Xinyan dressed up, she would certainly outshine that girl—but Wang Xinyan simply wasn't that sort.
"Wang Xinyan, over here!" Before Wei Zhao could even greet her, Bai Weituo had shot to his feet, waving eagerly.
"Xinyan, is this your boyfriend? He's not all that impressive!" The eye-catching girl looked Bai Weituo up and down, then said, "You're the treasure of our dorm. Whatever happened before, the sisters have to give him a proper screening now!"
Bai Weituo froze, and Wang Xinyan was mortified! Clearly the dorm's big sister had got the wrong person—but how was she supposed to explain? That Bai Weituo wasn't her boyfriend, and Wei Zhao was?
Except Wei Zhao wasn't her boyfriend either. She'd explained that before, but in the eyes of these three roommates, she'd barely arrived at school and already had a boy asking her out—there had to be some "impropriety" going on!
"He's not Wei Zhao..." With no other choice, Wang Xinyan could only say vaguely, "His name is Bai Weituo. He's a classmate of mine in the pharmacy major too..."
"Ha, you're looking for Brother Lin? This is him..." Bai Weituo introduced Wei Zhao to the eye-catching girl, but his own gaze had already fixed on her and would not come away...
"Hello, I'm Wei Zhao." Wei Zhao rose with a faint smile. "But I'm not Xinyan's boyfriend—we're just good friends."
Wei Zhao's words were perfectly proper, yet they nettled Wang Xinyan a little. If anyone should be explaining, it ought to be her, shouldn't it? Why did Wei Zhao seem even more eager than she was to clear the air? But Wang Xinyan's nature was placid, so she said nothing more.
The eye-catching girl, however, was startled. She gave Wei Zhao a somewhat surprised look, then held out her hand generously. "I'm He Meiyue, the big sister of Xinyan's dorm! Nice to meet you!"
"Heh heh, hello, He Meiyue." Wei Zhao smiled and gave her hand a light clasp, then let go.
