Chapter 1889 — Campaigning for Class Monitor
"Enough, stop staring!" Bai Weituo clapped Song Xiaodao on the back as the other man craned his neck every which way. "Don't bother hoping. Our whole major has exactly one girl in it..."
"Pfft... you can't be serious?" Song Xiaodao withdrew his gaze, thoroughly dejected. "Don't tell me it's the one with Lin Laoda?"
"The very same!" Bai Weituo shrugged. "Nothing to be done. My elder brother told me yesterday—of everyone registering, our major has just the one girl!"
"Good heavens, you're joking," Zhao Shengji said, equally glum.
"Word is there are still some transfer students coming in, but I doubt any of them are girls either," Bai Weituo said.
"Forget it. I'd better set my sights a little further afield and go look at the other majors," Song Xiaodao said, rather helplessly.
When they reached Room 1109, the situation inside was plain at a glance: only a dozen-odd people in all, and the first two rows weren't even full!
And in the third row, Wang Xinyan sat all alone, quietly reading the book in her hands, saying nothing—just as she had looked the first time Wei Zhao set eyes on her: demure, composed.
The boys in the first two rows kept sneaking glances back at Wang Xinyan, but not one of them could bring himself to go over and strike up a conversation.
"Lin Laoda, shall we head over?" Song Xiaodao grinned and pointed at Wang Xinyan's seat.
Wei Zhao had had no intention of going over, but seeing the three creatures from his dorm all wearing expressions that said this was the only natural course, he gave a bitter smile. If he didn't sit there, they'd probably think something was wrong with him!
Better to be open about it than to make a show of hiding it. In any case, without Bai Weituo and the others, Wei Zhao might well have chosen to sit beside Wang Xinyan himself. After all, she was the only person here he knew.
The four of them walked over and took seats in the third row. Wei Zhao sat next to Wang Xinyan, while the others took the row beside Wei Zhao.
It was a small classroom, with three rows of desks running front to back, three desks to a row—nine desks in all.
Wang Xinyan was on the window side, though she had taken the middle seat rather than the innermost one. That left just one seat on the outside; once Wei Zhao sat down, the others had no choice but to sit off to the side.
Someone suddenly sitting down beside her made Wang Xinyan start slightly, and she knit her brows. Looking up, she was startled to find it was Wei Zhao, and her cheeks flushed faintly. "It's you?"
"Yeah. Seems you're the only girl here?" Wei Zhao asked.
"That's right..." Wang Xinyan smiled bitterly. "That's why my dorm is all students from other majors. He Meiyue and the others are in the biology department too, but she and Chai Xiaoling are studying botany. Lan Xiaoru is in biochemistry."
"Oh? The three of them aren't in the same major either?" Wei Zhao was a little surprised.
"My dorm is really just a patchwork one. The number of students in each specialty of each department doesn't always divide evenly into dorms, so in the end there are always a few left over, and those leftovers get assigned to a dorm together. Our major has only me, so I ended up with them," Wang Xinyan explained.
"So that's how it is." Wei Zhao nodded. The two of them were talking when suddenly the low buzz of whispers in the classroom cut off altogether! After all, everyone here was meeting for the first time. They might know their own roommates by now, but with everyone else they'd only just met and were busy introducing themselves—so a sudden silence could only mean something had happened!
Wei Zhao and Wang Xinyan looked up along with the rest, and there they saw a yellow-haired fellow and a purple-haired fellow clearing the way in front, while a big bald man swaggered into the classroom, cockier than words could tell—like one of those good-for-nothing young masters of ancient times who brought a pair of lackeys along whenever he went out to stir up trouble.
Seeing this person turn up here, a flicker of something strange passed through Wei Zhao's eyes. He was studying pharmacy too?
Wang Xinyan, however, gave a small start. The man before them was no stranger to her—and it was because of this very man that Wei Zhao had gotten into a confrontation on her behalf during the college entrance exams. This was You Panhu.
You Panhu's appearance had always been thoroughly unappealing, and flanked as he was by Yellow-Hair and Purple-Hair, the students in the room couldn't help but feel a natural sense of dread, unable to fathom why these three thug-like characters had suddenly turned up in their classroom!
You Panhu was quite pleased with the sudden hush that fell over the room. He strode up to the podium and announced with great swagger, "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is You Panhu! When the teacher comes to elect the class monitor in a bit, everyone vote for me and there'll be something in it for you. Otherwise—heh heh..."
Though no one was happy at being threatened by a pack of scoundrels right at the start of term, these three were plainly no good sorts, so for the moment everyone kept their mouths shut and no one dared to talk back.
"Yellow-Hair, hand out the red envelopes!" You Panhu said to the yellow-haired one beside him.
"Yes!" Yellow-Hair nodded, carried a box of red envelopes down the rows, and set it down in front of the first student in the first row!
Though the student understood well enough what You Panhu meant, he didn't dare help himself to a red envelope just then, and sat there frozen, at a loss.
"Damn you, take it when it's handed to you—don't push your luck when someone's being nice!" Yellow-Hair glared, and the terrified student hurriedly fished a red envelope out of the box.
After that, Yellow-Hair went one by one to the other students. They had only just met and had yet to band together, so naturally no one dared resist Yellow-Hair on his own. Seeing that someone had taken an envelope, they all followed suit one after another and picked theirs up...
But when Yellow-Hair came to Wei Zhao, he visibly froze!
He had never once imagined Wei Zhao might be in this classroom, and Wei Zhao was sitting at the end of the third row, hardly conspicuous at all. Now that he saw him, he was struck dumb on the spot!
Wei Zhao looked at Yellow-Hair with a half-smile, though inwardly he was deeply puzzled. Why would You Panhu go to such lengths to win a class monitor post? By all rights, the offspring of these hidden families came to study here with the attitude of treating the world as a playground. That he should actually care about a position like class monitor struck Wei Zhao as truly odd!
After all, a university class monitor was hardly a plum job. Like a dorm head, it meant liaising between the advisor, the lecturers, the student union, and the students of the class—a thankless drudgery with no pay, to put it bluntly.
Of course, it sounded impressive, and it was good training in one's organizational skills, with no small benefit for stepping into the working world later.
Only, what use was such a position to You Panhu? (To be continued)
