Chapter 1949 — Why? After All, Wei Zhao Was a Man Who Yielded to Gentleness, Not Force — and Seeing Han Jingyi Crying on the Ground, He Could Not Quite Bear It

The Blossom Guardian

Before this, Wei Zhao had filed her away in the category of people he suspected, and so he had never wanted much contact with her. But now it seemed things might be a little different? This Han Jingyi appeared to have no guile at all — on the contrary, she seemed to be missing a screw or two.

"All right, stop crying. Let me see how your head is." Wei Zhao bent down and gently moved Han Jingyi's hand aside, only to find a great goose-egg swelling on the back of her head. He thought to himself: thank heavens this girl is young; a few years older, and a fall like that would have given her a cerebral hemorrhage.

"Wuwu... it hurts so much..." Han Jingyi's face was a pear blossom drenched in rain, pitiable beyond words.

By now a good many students on their way to school were looking over — after all, everyone was curious: what was a girl doing sitting on the ground crying?

Some clueless but imaginative classmates began spinning theories, and as they spun them they scolded Wei Zhao on the side: "See that? The guy must have cheated on her, and then his girlfriend found out. Look how pitiful she is!"

"This guy's eyes must be stuck to the soles of his shoes. A girlfriend that pretty — if she were mine I'd treasure her, I'd enshrine her — and look, he's still making her cry like that!" Another boy spoke with righteous indignation.

Wei Zhao was far away, but he was at least an Earth-rank expert; his ears and eyes were naturally beyond ordinary men. He heard the two of them perfectly clearly, and was left utterly speechless.

He had to admit that Han Jingyi was a little beauty: a round face, big eyes, a porcelain-doll quality about her. Hers was not the classical beauty of the Eldest Miss, nor the pure, clever, elfin loveliness of Shen Yushu; rather, she had a sort of little-loli charm.

Especially now, weeping so pitifully, she could stir anyone's compassion; and so the commentary around them was almost entirely one-sided in her favor, while Wei Zhao became the heartless villain.

Wei Zhao did not care about such things, but if this jumble of talk reached the Eldest Miss's ears it would be trouble. He could only settle it quickly: he reached out and laid his hand on the swelling on Han Jingyi's head, swiftly circulating the Xuanyuan Dragon-Taming Art, and healed the swelling in a trice...

"There, get up, let's go quickly!" Wei Zhao said once she was healed.

"Huh? It doesn't hurt anymore?" Han Jingyi touched the back of her head and found the swelling gone. She stared at Wei Zhao in astonishment, then cried out in delight, "Wow, you're amazing! How did you do that? Can you teach me?"

Wei Zhao frowned, only then realizing that in his haste he had been a little rash — using true qi to heal a neighbor he had just met, and a curious little baby of a neighbor at that, one who seemed determined to get to the bottom of everything.

"Later! Right now we need to get to the classroom — people are watching!" Wei Zhao said.

"Oh, all right, all right!" Han Jingyi patted the dust off her trousers and trotted along after Wei Zhao.

"What's going on here?" Seeing Han Jingyi, who a moment ago had been crying without end, suddenly beaming and following Wei Zhao off as if nothing had happened, the onlookers were all rather baffled.

"I've got it — she must have asked her boyfriend for something outrageous, and he refused, so she cried; then he agreed, so she smiled!" one onlooker said.

"Ah! That does sound right. Maybe she wanted some cosmetics or clothes and her boyfriend wouldn't buy them, so she threw a tantrum?" another onlooker nodded.

"Very likely!" a third chimed in...

But whatever the case, the parties involved had gone, and so the rest dispersed... It was class time now; watching a bit of excitement was all very well, but missing class would be a loss not worth the gain.

"Wei Zhao, how old are you? What month were you born? How are you so amazing?" Han Jingyi asked, like a curious child.

"I don't know," Wei Zhao said. He was telling the truth — how would Wei Zhao know what month he was born? Did orphans ever know?

"Ah... how is that possible? You're lying," Han Jingyi said.

"I'm not lying. I'm an orphan," Wei Zhao said, humoring her for fear she would cry again.

"Ah!" Han Jingyi was taken aback; she had not expected such an answer, and fell silent for a moment. At length she said, "I'm sorry, I didn't know... Well, you look older than me, so I'll just call you Brother Wei Zhao!"

"It's nothing. I'm used to it," Wei Zhao said mildly. "We're classmates. If you call me brother, what will people think when they see it?"

"Why should we care what other people think?" Han Jingyi asked, puzzled.

"Why?" Wei Zhao was stumped; he did not know how to answer her.

"Yes, why?" Han Jingyi asked.

"Never mind. Suit yourself," Wei Zhao said, shaking his head. This Han Jingyi's intelligence seemed a little deficient — surely that fall just now hadn't knocked her silly?

"That... you can't learn it," Wei Zhao said with a bitter smile.

"Why can't I learn it?" Han Jingyi blinked curiously.

"Because..." Wei Zhao did not even know what to say. "Why do you have so many whys? Why don't you go read One Hundred Thousand Whys?"

"What's One Hundred Thousand Whys?" Han Jingyi asked curiously.

"You've defeated me," Wei Zhao said, speechless. "How did you ever live this long?"

"I live with my little brother!" Han Jingyi said, perfectly serious.

"..." Wei Zhao pointed at the classroom ahead. "We're here. This is it — this is the medical department."

"Thanks! Can I walk to and from school with you every day from now on, Brother Wei Zhao?" Han Jingyi asked happily.

"We'll see," Wei Zhao said. Right now he wanted to shake off this little Miss One Hundred Thousand Whys. Why did she talk so much? How had he failed to notice before? If he had known she would be this much trouble, he would have refused her outright when she asked to share his car that morning.

Wei Zhao entered the classroom and, sure enough, found the seating just as before: Wang Xinyan was still in her old seat. He walked over and sat down beside her.

Han Jingyi, meanwhile, followed Wei Zhao to his side — but her appearance drew sidelong glances from the class. Wang Xinyan was a campus beauty too, yet she had been spoken for the moment she arrived, so the boys had simply given up any ideas.
