Chapter 1950 — I'm Afraid I'll Get Lost

The Blossom Guardian

"What else do you want?" Wei Zhao frowned and lifted his head to look at Han Jingyi.

"Where am I supposed to sit?" Han Jingyi asked.

"Sit anywhere. Aren't there plenty of empty seats?" Wei Zhao gestured at the seats all around them.

"Then may I sit beside you, Brother Wei Zhao?" Han Jingyi asked, gazing at him piteously.

"There's no room beside me. Are you going to sit in the aisle?" Wei Zhao turned her down on the spot. If he agreed to this, he could forget about class altogether — she would be plying him with one question after another, endlessly, and he would get nothing else done.

"You let this sister sit on the inside, and you sit in the middle — then wouldn't I be able to sit beside you?" At least Han Jingyi's logic was sound.

"No." Before Wang Xinyan could speak, Wei Zhao refused flatly.

Han Jingyi wanted to say more, but Instructor Bai had already walked into the classroom with a textbook tucked under his arm. Seeing the teacher arrive, she had no choice but to drop into the nearest empty seat, thoroughly glum.

Wang Xinyan looked at Han Jingyi, then at Wei Zhao, rather puzzled. She wanted to ask, but feared Wei Zhao would take her for a busybody, so she held her tongue.

"Hm... So student Han Jingyi has arrived?" Instructor Bai spotted her the moment he entered, nodded to her, and said, "Let me introduce her to everyone. Han Jingyi is the second girl in our pharmacy program. She was held up by some business and has only come to school today!"

Held up by business? More likely she was dodging the military training, wasn't it? Some of the students could not help thinking so — but then, Han Jingyi was a delicate beauty, so if she dodged it, no great matter.

So when Instructor Bai finished, warm applause broke out in the classroom; plainly the boys were giving Han Jingyi a hearty welcome.

"All right, the new student has been introduced, so let's get ready for class." Instructor Bai tapped the lectern. "Our program is rather special. In other majors, freshmen generally take no specialized courses, but ours is different — we begin specialized courses in the first year, and they account for a considerable proportion of the load! And of course, essentially all of those specialized courses will be taught by me alone!"

No one was much surprised by this, for after the military training Bai Weituo had handed out the schedule, and everyone already knew the course plan for the first semester.

Today was Instructor Bai's first class, so he did not plunge straight into the material. Instead he spoke about what the pharmacy department would study over the four years, what they would need to master, and what achievements would await them after graduating from the department, and so on...

What astonished everyone was that many core R&D personnel at the major pharmaceutical factories had in fact graduated under Instructor Bai. The students present felt a stir of reverence for him — no wonder the elders at home had insisted they apply here!

Apart from the few who simply loved medicinal herbs for their own sake, everyone present came from families connected with medicine: they either owned pharmaceutical factories and drug companies, or worked in health-supplement research, or ran traditional Chinese medicine clinics of their own. That was why their relatives and friends had sent their children here to study — to learn some genuine skill and go home to do their part for the family business.

"Wei Zhao... that Han Jingyi..." When the break came, Wang Xinyan finally could not hold back and asked him.

"She's my neighbor. She insisted on my bringing her to class this morning." Wei Zhao smiled wryly. "I think there's something a little off with her IQ — she's rather simple, isn't she?"

"A neighbor..." A faint ache rose in Wang Xinyan's heart, a feeling she could not put into words, strange and unlike anything she had ever felt before.

"Yeah..." Wei Zhao was about to say something more when he saw Han Jingyi rise and come over, and helplessness washed over him. "What is it now?"

"Brother Wei Zhao, where is the restroom? I... I'd like to go..." Han Jingyi's cheeks flushed slightly.

"I... I'm afraid I'll get lost..." Han Jingyi said, a little embarrassed.

"I'll take you. I wanted to go anyway," Wang Xinyan said, standing up.

A flicker of disappointment crossed Han Jingyi's eyes, but it vanished in an instant, and she nodded to Wang Xinyan. "All right — thank you, sister!"

"It's nothing. It's on my way." With that, Wang Xinyan led Han Jingyi off to the restroom.

Wang Xinyan had in fact been wanting to get acquainted with the new girl; after all, they were the only two girls in the class, and for future activities it would be handier to have another girl along — sparing them such awkwardness as the changing during military training.

While Wang Xinyan and Han Jingyi were gone, Bai Weituo sidled over. "Brother Lin, what's the story with this Han Jingyi? Don't tell me she's another young lady of yours?"

"Nothing much. We met on the way to school, and she's in the pharmacy program too, so I brought her along." Wei Zhao said nothing about her being his neighbor — too many people were gathered around Bai Weituo, and if word got out, they would all want to visit his home. With the young lady and Xiaoshu both there, that would be hard to explain.

So Wei Zhao meant to tell Bai Weituo in private later.

"What? No way — you're that lucky!" Song Xiaodao said with unconcealed envy. "Why do I never run into anything like that? Now I'm the only single one left — Old Bai and Shengji both have their sights set on someone..."

"Shengji?" Wei Zhao blinked and looked at Zhao Shengji. He knew about Bai Weituo's pursuit of He Meiyue, but he had not known Zhao Shengji had a target too.

"Chai Xiaoling, heh heh..." Zhao Shengji said, sticking out his round belly.

Wei Zhao looked at Zhao Shengji, then thought of Chai Xiaoling's petite frame, and felt a chill run through him. The two of them together really were a striking contrast!

"By the way, Bai Weituo, how are the performances for the freshman gala coming along?" Wei Zhao asked.

"Pretty much settled. I talked it over with our classmates yesterday — our class is doing a chorus, and I'm the lead singer!" Bai Weituo said. "No classes this afternoon, so we start rehearsals!"
