Chapter 1987 — Inviting Wei Zhao

The Blossom Guardian

"I don't know," Wei Zhao said.

"Looks like I'll have to go buy a cultivation manual after all," Han Jingyi said.

"Buy one..." Wei Zhao was somewhat at a loss for words.

"That's right — in a bit I'll ask Teacher Bai, see if he knows where they're sold." Han Jingyi seemed to have struck upon a brilliant idea; she clenched her fist and spoke excitedly.

When they reached the classroom, the students were all eagerly discussing the freshman gala performance. Bai Weituo, full of enthusiasm, was leading several of the more heavily involved extras through a rehearsal, following the MV on his phone — the whole room was a scene of bustling activity.

Wang Xinyan, however, sat in her seat quietly reading a book, as though none of this had much to do with her. Like Wei Zhao, she had been given one of the most ordinary extra roles, so there was no need for her to rehearse either — she simply had to sit in her seat and hum a few harmonies.

Wei Zhao walked over and sat down beside Wang Xinyan, while Han Jingyi took the seat behind them both. That the class's only two girls both declined the lead roles left Bai Weituo somewhat helpless, yet there was nothing he could do about it. One of the girls was on ambiguous terms with Wei Zhao, and the other seemed to have no interest in Xu Shilan at all — Bai Weituo was at his wit's end.

Seeing Wei Zhao come in, he could only walk over and plead: "Brother Lin, can't you spare me one of them..."

"Spare you what?" Wei Zhao blinked.

"A beauty!" Bai Weituo said.

"A beauty?" Wei Zhao turned to glance at Wang Xinyan, then at Han Jingyi behind him, and said: "You want them to perform?"

"Brother Lin, how wise of you — exactly so!" Bai Weituo nodded hurriedly.

"You two — which of you is willing to go up and perform?" Wei Zhao asked.

"Same as you — I'll be an extra," Wang Xinyan said flatly, flipping through the textbook in her hands.

"And you..." Wei Zhao turned to look at Han Jingyi.

But Han Jingyi did not answer directly; instead she turned to Bai Weituo: "Can you refine pills?"

"Huh?" Bai Weituo was startled — he had not expected her to bring up such a topic. He hesitated a moment, then shook his head: "No..."

"Oh, then never mind. I want to study pill refinement — I don't have the time," Han Jingyi said, shaking her head and turning down Bai Weituo's proposal.

Bai Weituo sighed. He wanted to say something, but in the end said nothing; he gave Wei Zhao a bitter smile and went off to continue rehearsing with his classmates.

Fortunately, even without the two girls taking the lead or extra roles, there was still Xu Shilan as the female lead, so the boys clustered around her like stars around the moon — a charm all its own.

Around eight o'clock, Bai Lingtou walked into the classroom. Bai Weituo stopped the rehearsal at once and, catching sight of him, hurried over: "Professor Bai!"

At school, Bai Weituo always addressed Bai Lingtou as Professor Bai or Teacher Bai.

"Mm... you're rehearsing?" Bai Lingtou asked, taking in the bustling scene inside the classroom.

"Yes, Professor Bai!" Bai Weituo nodded.

"In that case, this morning's class is cancelled — carry on with your rehearsal. There are no classes today or tomorrow; I want you to go win us a good ranking at tomorrow night's freshman gala and bring some honor to our medical specialty!" Bai Lingtou made the decision on the spot to cancel class: "Our medical specialty hasn't won an award in years — all because that little brat Bai Weikai is no good, his abilities are too poor. You, though, you're not bad!"

"Uh... actually it's all thanks to Brother Lin," Bai Weituo said hurriedly, not daring to take the credit for himself.

"Oh?" Bai Lingtou gave Wei Zhao a meaningful glance and said to him: "Student Wei Zhao, after the freshman gala is over, come find me. That matter I mentioned to you before — have you thought it over?"

"Before?" Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback. He realized Bai Lingtou must mean teaching him some special medical techniques — but what exactly were these techniques?

At this moment, Wei Zhao's view of Bai Lingtou had completely changed. Previously, in Wei Zhao's eyes, Bai Lingtou — however capable — was at most a figure on par with Old Man Wei. But ever since Wei Zhao had seen the respect You Panhu showed Bai Lingtou, and the reverent, earnest attitude Bai Lingtou brought to his lectures, Wei Zhao had come to feel that Bai Lingtou was truly no ordinary man!

The hidden You family was a great concealed clan of pill refinement and medicine — and yet their descendants studied here with such humility. How, then, could Bai Lingtou be an ordinary person?

And after listening to Bai Lingtou's lectures, Wei Zhao had felt his eyes opened anew. Many of Bai Lingtou's theories differed from Old Man Wei's; both were right, yet their directions differed, and it had broadened Wei Zhao's thinking a great deal and greatly enlarged his horizons.

If even the elementary fundamentals were like this, then what would the special medical techniques Bai Lingtou spoke of be?

At the thought, Wei Zhao could not help but feel a stir of anticipation!

Thinking back to the beginning, Wei Zhao had not taken it seriously at all — but now it seemed he had underestimated Bai Lingtou.

"All right, once the freshman gala is over, I'll find a time to come see you!" Wei Zhao nodded.

Hearing Wei Zhao agree, Bai Lingtou chuckled to himself, delighted. He thought: brat, weren't you uninterested at first? Now after a few of my lectures, you see I'm no ordinary man, don't you?

Though he did not know what Bai Lingtou wanted with Wei Zhao, You Panhu's eyes flashed with a look of envious, jealous hatred... He had long wanted to pay Bai Lingtou a private visit, but had never had the chance.

He had not expected Bai Lingtou to take the initiative and invite Wei Zhao to come find him. This made You Panhu wonder — should he too pay a visit after the freshman gala? Bai Lingtou had not invited him, but if he went anyway, surely Bai Lingtou could not drive him off?

Having said his piece, Bai Lingtou turned and left. Bai Weituo continued rehearsing with the students. You Panhu and his two colorful-haired underlings, adopting an attitude of neither performing nor causing trouble, sat there as ordinary extras just like Wei Zhao. And Bai Weituo, knowing these three were not the type to fit in, made no particular demands of them.

In truth, but for Bai Lingtou's sake, You Panhu would not even have deigned to take part. But on Bai Lingtou's turf, wanting to learn more knowledge, he naturally could not go too far — wouldn't refusing to participate be a slap in Bai Lingtou's face?

Besides, playing an extra was no trouble at all: sit there, hum a couple of harmonies along with the rest, and it was done — quite simple, really.

The morning slipped by in a hurry, and the time rolled around to the noon break.
