Chapter 2120 — Endless Sighs
When you are useful, they toss you a little sweetness; when you are not, they will likely kick you aside without a second thought!
He did not know whether he would still have a chance to remain in the hidden You family. Would the hidden You family keep a cripple? He reckoned that the moment he got back, he would be thrown out. And then—a useless wreck, his whole body covered in wounds, unable even to do ordinary manual labor—he would have no choice but to beg for his meals, wouldn't he?
If only he could take it all back! He had thought that throwing in his lot with the You family meant a bright future, that he could rise within the You family and break through the barrier early, advancing to the Heaven Rank! He was a rogue cultivator; to have reached such a level of cultivation was already a point of pride. And now it had all turned into a dream.
Of course, he still had one secret—a secret of tremendous magnitude—that he had not told. That secret was how a rogue cultivator like him had managed to advance to the mid Earth Rank at the age of twenty-four. He had planned to break through to the Heaven Rank within the hidden You family, and then, to repay the hidden You family, reveal that secret.
But now he had seen through the warmth and coldness of human hearts. If the You family treated him like this, how could he still bring himself to reveal such a great secret?
Drawing a deep breath, this You family disciple looked at Old Master You with a last shred of hope, praying that he would grant him a Meridian-Unblocking Pill and a Minor Rejuvenation Pill. Otherwise, even if his injuries healed, he would still be a cripple—his very survival would be in question.
"Go back and rest. Once you return to the You family, I will give you a severance payment. Spend it sparingly, and it will be enough to last you the rest of your life!" Old Master You was displeased, and his voice was cold.
"I... very well!" The You family disciple nodded helplessly. "But Patriarch, you need not worry. Fortunately, this disciple collected a Minor Rejuvenation Pill and a Meridian-Unblocking Pill years ago. My injuries are already suppressed. Let me go and fetch them now..."
"Oh? You actually have such pills in your own possession? That is good, then. Go on!" Old Master You had not expected this fellow to have such treasures. It seemed he had not entered the tournament with a do-or-die resolve, but with a hidden card up his sleeve!
How could he know that the disciple had only said this offhand, to save a bit of face? The disciple had already resolved to kill himself. To be a cripple was a monstrous disgrace for a martial artist. Though Old Master You had said he would give him a severance payment, he would rather die than drag out a wretched existence!
The disciple cupped his fists in salute, then turned and walked away...
Wei Zhao, however, watched the disciple's receding back, lost in thought.
As a former assassin, Wei Zhao had studied the human heart and human nature thoroughly and deeply. The disciple's eyes had just been filled with utter despair—did that look like a man who possessed life-saving pills? The disciple was most likely going off to end his own life!
This left Wei Zhao sighing endlessly. These people—they sold their lives for these hidden families, and in the end they were kicked aside like garbage. This fellow was one such case; that blue-haired Earth Rank man who had once been at You Panhu's side was another...
Old Master You, however, paid the disciple no mind at all; his thoughts were elsewhere...
Wei Zhao had won again—was there no justice left in the world? He had withstood a full-force blow from a fighter equivalent to the early Heaven Rank, and after a brief moment of regulating his breath he had recovered as though nothing had happened. And then look at their own family's disciple, and the Golden Bell Sect's disciple—both looked dreadful now, suffering from severe internal injuries!
And that Fire Wolf Gang disciple had probably already died! Old Master You knew perfectly well what the Fire Wolf Gang was up to: they had simply produced a few hypnotized puppets injected with biochemical serum. Relying on the drugs, the puppet feared neither death nor pain, clinging to a single breath. Once the drug's effect wore off, it would surely die!
Such sinister methods bore some resemblance to the Tomorrow and Tomorrow Sect, so even though their contestant had died, no one dared bring it up again. Thus the Fire Wolf Gang's hold on third place was unassailable!
Yet just because these people did not question it did not mean no one would! A cold voice rang out: "The Fire Wolf Gang truly does things with remarkable originality—sending a puppet-like figure up to compete. By now he is probably dead, isn't he? How laughable!"
"The victor is king and the loser a bandit. Wei Zhao, why do you have so much to say? He died after the fact—what business is it of yours?" An Mingyue was furious, yet he truly did not dare do anything to Wei Zhao. His own nephew had been beaten to death by Wei Zhao, his son's leg had been broken, and even the Fire Wolf Gang's peak late Earth Rank fighters did not dare touch Wei Zhao—so what could An Mingyue do? He could only say flatly: "The tournament rules state that so long as one takes the challenge, it counts. Did they ever say a man cannot die afterward?"
Wei Zhao had only spoken up because he found that You family disciple somewhat pitiful. But if he were truly asked to stand up for the disciple, Wei Zhao had no interest in doing so. Even if he dragged the Fire Wolf Gang down from third place and put the hidden You family in their stead, Wei Zhao would not gain a single cent from it.
"Very well. Since there are no problems, let these three families come up to the stage and collect their stakes!" said Old Master Zhao.
Wei Zhao collected his stakes and glanced at those of the Fire Wolf Gang and the Golden Bell Sect. The Golden Bell Sect's stake was the same as before, and Wei Zhao had no interest in it whatsoever. But what the Fire Wolf Gang had put up this time was a bottle of serum...
"What is this serum?" Wei Zhao asked. When registering, An Mingyue had only written it down as "Serum 01," with no explanation of what it was.
"A serum that can make a person instantly powerful. Do you want it?" An Mingyue said without betraying any emotion. Precious as it was, the serum was a harmful thing. It could indeed make a person instantly powerful, but the side effects afterward were equally obvious—just like those Fire Wolf Gang disciples before. During the match they feared neither pain nor death, their potential pushed to the limit; but once the match ended, they could not escape a fate of death!
An Mingyue hated Wei Zhao to the bone, so naturally he would not explain too much.
"Oh, sounds rather good. Give it to me." With that, Wei Zhao casually pulled a rather useless natural treasure from his own stakes and tossed it to An Mingyue, trading it for that Serum 01.
"No problem!" An Mingyue completed the exchange with Wei Zhao readily. That natural treasure was worth far more to An Mingyue than the Serum 01, so he was naturally delighted.
Serum 01? Wei Zhao sneered inwardly. He had a fairly good guess as to what this thing really was!
