Chapter 1988 — Who Came for Nothing?
It was already past eleven; by the time Wei Zhao drove to the airport, it would be about right...
Of course, besides Wei Zhao's car, a Range Rover Evoque was also heading to the airport from the Xueshang Hotel — Zhang Duopan at the wheel, with Cheng Yiyi in the passenger seat, rushing to the airport as well.
And so, at the domestic arrivals gate, Wei Zhao "unexpectedly" spotted Zhang Duopan and a girl wearing sunglasses.
Zhang Duopan spotted Wei Zhao too, and felt all the more certain that Xu Shilan had been invited by Wei Zhao! After all, in Room 444, Wei Zhao was the only one with a car — low-key as it seemed, he alone had the means, and now it was plain as day.
Since they had seen each other and shared the same purpose, Zhang Duopan naturally came over with a smile that was not a smile: "Well, if it isn't Wei Zhao? What's this — here to pick someone up at the airport?"
Wei Zhao was actually rather puzzled to see Zhang Duopan too, and then he glanced at the unfamiliar girl beside him and immediately guessed something. Could this little number be that coffee girl, Cheng Yiyi? But Wei Zhao didn't follow celebrities — he didn't even know a big star like Xu Shilan, so how could he possibly know a minor starlet who had just debuted?
Still, since she was Xu Shilan's junior apprentice-sister, it was only natural that she would come to pick her up now that Xu Shilan had arrived here.
"Aren't you asking the obvious?" Wei Zhao said flatly.
"Hmph, what kind of skill is it to invite Xu Shilan here? Even if you win, it isn't Bai Weituo's own strength. When the time comes, He Meiyue may not even acknowledge it, and the bet won't count," Zhang Duopan said, his expression shifting, thoroughly displeased.
This freshman gala could not possibly outdo Xu Shilan now, so Zhang Duopan had begun to shirk responsibility.
"Is that so? I wonder who it was that broke the rules first by inviting a celebrity? If you hadn't, naturally we wouldn't have either." Wei Zhao gave Zhang Duopan a look that was half smile, half something else — the boy's word really didn't count for much; he was already going back on it.
"That..." Zhang Duopan was left speechless by Wei Zhao, yet what Wei Zhao said was not wrong either. Indeed, it was he who had first invited a celebrity, so he couldn't very well argue the point; he could only snort and say: "Anyway, anything that relies on someone else doesn't count — then let's just say none of it counts!"
"Ha, no use telling me all this. Go tell He Meiyue." Wei Zhao said indifferently.
Whether Zhang Duopan went back on his word or not was no concern of Wei Zhao's. If he wanted to shamelessly renege, there was nothing Wei Zhao could do about it — at most, he could have Bai Weituo go talk to He Meiyue.
"Don't think that just because you invited Xu Shilan here — I'm telling you, in a bit Xu Shilan will be leaving with Cheng Yiyi. Looks like you came all this way for nothing!" Zhang Duopan snorted.
"Oh," Wei Zhao answered.
Seeing that Wei Zhao was paying him no attention at all, Zhang Duopan grew even angrier, feeling that he was casting pearls before swine. He snorted and walked over to Cheng Yiyi, ignoring Wei Zhao.
After a while, the announcement came over the speakers with the flight information for Xu Shilan's plane. The flight had landed; in a little while, the passengers would begin coming out.
Sure enough, before long a crowd came bustling out of the arrivals exit, and among them was a figure in a black trench coat, black baseball cap, oversized sunglasses, and an oversized scarf — someone whose gender could not be told without looking at their build.
This was obviously Xu Shilan. Her disguise was far more elaborate than Cheng Yiyi's — but then, she was clearly much more famous than Cheng Yiyi, so her armor was that much tighter.
Cheng Yiyi, being fairly familiar with Xu Shilan, spotted her at a glance and immediately waved, calling out: "Sister Han!"
"Haha, Yiyi!" Xu Shilan saw Cheng Yiyi too and nodded at her with a smile.
Cheng Yiyi hadn't called Xu Shilan by name — only "Sister Han" — so no one in the airport gave it a second thought, and it drew no crowd.
Xu Shilan also spotted Wei Zhao not far away. She was somewhat surprised that he had come to meet her; she had assumed he wouldn't, since this fellow had never once come to pick her up before — whether she was here to endorse a product or to support Wei Zhao's product, she had always come on her own. So this time, she hadn't imagined Wei Zhao would come to meet her either.
"Wei Zhao? You actually came?" Xu Shilan was overjoyed.
"Mm. You didn't bring a driver this time, nor a manager, so of course I had to come meet you," Wei Zhao nodded.
"Well, this really is a rarity. Then let's go — I'm staying at the Xueshang Hotel; Yiyi has already booked a room for me," Xu Shilan said.
Xu Shilan's words clearly meant she was leaving with Wei Zhao, which instantly made Zhang Duopan lose face. He had just been swearing to Wei Zhao that he had come for nothing, but by the looks of it, Xu Shilan seemed rather warm toward Wei Zhao?
What exactly was the relationship between these two? It didn't seem like a simple matter of being paid help!
"Senior Sister, why don't you ride in our car? We'll go straight to the hotel — no need to trouble your friend here," Cheng Yiyi said, having noticed Zhang Duopan's displeasure. She didn't mind doing a small favor; to her it was no more than lifting a finger.
"No need, I'll just ride in Wei Zhao's car." Xu Shilan smiled slightly and said: "See you at the hotel in a bit."
"Well, that works too..." Cheng Yiyi was also slightly taken aback — Xu Shilan had actually refused? Just what was the relationship between this Wei Zhao and her? Normally, at the company, when attending events, Xu Shilan would in many cases ride in the same car as her; and even when they weren't in the same car, an invitation from her would be gladly accepted. But today Xu Shilan had refused...
Seeing Cheng Yiyi turned down, Zhang Duopan's expression grew even darker... It seemed this trip to the airport had been somewhat superfluous!
Once out of the airport, the two cars drove onto the expressway one behind the other. Irritated, Zhang Duopan didn't wait for Wei Zhao; he floored the accelerator and the car shot off, speeding the whole way back toward the hotel.
"What's the relationship between that Wei Zhao and Xu Shilan? They seem to be on pretty good terms — she wouldn't even do you, her junior apprentice-sister, a favor," Zhang Duopan grumbled in great annoyance.
"Haha, maybe they're just very good friends?" Cheng Yiyi wasn't angry at all; she was busy sending a text message: "The signal here doesn't seem very good?"
"There's probably some kind of shielding near the airport?" Zhang Duopan said. "You need to make a call? Use mine — mine has signal..."
"Thanks, no need. I'm just sending a text to let the people at the company know I've met up with Senior Sister," Cheng Yiyi said with a wave of her hand.
