Chapter 1944 — Can't Remember

The Blossom Guardian

"All right, let's not talk about that anymore. Tell us about Uncle Qing. Wei Zhao, you must know about Uncle Qing's past, don't you? What really happened? Tell Xiaoshu and me about it." Gu Mengyao was afraid that if the conversation went on, Wei Zhao would start asking this and that again—the more one said, the more one gave away—so she hurriedly steered the topic back to Uncle Qing.

Besides, she was very curious about the story between Uncle Qing and Grandma Sun, and Wei Zhao clearly knew something about it; that much had been plain from the look on his face at the dinner table.

"All right..." Wei Zhao happened to have nothing else to do. Uncle Qing was inside talking with Grandma Sun, so Wei Zhao sat in the living room and told Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu the story of the massacre that had wiped out Uncle Qing's family all those years ago...

When Wei Zhao finished, the young miss's face was tinged with sorrow, and Xiaoshu too was silent. Clearly both of them had been moved by the misery of Uncle Qing's past. Wei Zhao did not disturb them; when he had first heard Uncle Qing tell it, he had felt the same grief and the same sighing wonder.

After a long while, Gu Mengyao said, "I knew Uncle Qing had a bitter past, but I never imagined it was as tragic as that..."

"Yes. To think that Uncle Qing's daughter... and his master..." Shen Yushu now showed her true nature again. "Still, he found Grandma Sun. That's a blessing in the midst of misfortune."

"Yes. I hope they can be together and live out their remaining years in peace..." Gu Mengyao nodded.

"I just wonder how Grandma Sun lost her memory, and whether she can get it back," Shen Yushu said.

Gu Mengyao was so angry she nearly kicked Shen Yushu in her plump chest and killed her outright. Why bring up the matter of lost memory again?

"Wei Zhao, your medical skills are superb. Is there anything you can do?" Gu Mengyao shifted the topic to Wei Zhao's medical skill, giving him no chance to make further associations.

"I... I'll give it a try," Wei Zhao said. He could not promise anything; he would examine her first and see.

Not long after Wei Zhao finished his account, Uncle Qing and Grandma Sun pushed the door open and came out. Wei Zhao saw that Uncle Qing's face held relief, but also some distress, while Grandma Sun's face seemed at once sorrowful and lost...

"Uncle Qing, how did it go?" Gu Mengyao asked.

"I told her everything... but she can't remember any of it..." Uncle Qing said with a bitter smile.

"I can't be sure either... whether I am Mr. Li Fu's wife, because I truly have no memory of it..." Grandma Sun said, somewhat painfully. "I can't remember. I have not a single memory. But I know you wouldn't lie to me..."

"By the way, Uncle Qing, when you and Grandma Sun married, wasn't there a marriage certificate?" Wei Zhao asked suddenly. That ought to be the most important piece of evidence. Though these martial artists cared little for the rules of the mundane world, they might still have gone through the motions.

"There was. But when the family was massacred, there was barely time to save our lives—how could I have had the chance to take such things with me?" Uncle Qing said with a bitter smile. "This identity of Li Fu was re-registered for me with Mr. Gu's help."

"Hmm... but there should be a record at the Civil Affairs Bureau, shouldn't there? We can just look it up," Wei Zhao said. "If it was registered in another province or city and it's inconvenient to check, I can ask Yang Huaijun or Qiu Lingshan to look into it. They should have an easier time of it."

"That's right!" Uncle Qing's eyes lit up. "Luoyue, when we married, we had our photograph taken too. There must be a record. We'll know as soon as we check."

"Mm..." Though Grandma Sun now believed Uncle Qing's words, if there was evidence, she certainly did not mind confirming it.

Wei Zhao wasted no time. He dialed Yang Huaijun's number directly and explained the matter. Yang Huaijun agreed at once; for him, looking up a marriage registration record was a trifling matter.

Before long, word came back from Yang Huaijun: he sent an email to Wei Zhao's phone. It was the marriage registration of Fu Li and Sun Luoyue. One had to admit his efficiency was remarkable—it was already after working hours, yet Yang Huaijun had still obtained the record in a very short time.

Handing the phone to Uncle Qing and Grandma Sun, Wei Zhao said, "Here it is. Now, Grandma Sun, can you believe it?"

"Ah... so it really is true!" Looking at the record on the phone, Grandma Sun's face showed a complicated expression. After all, what Uncle Qing had told her was a sorrowful tale, and she had no memory of it; but now that her identity was confirmed, her heart suddenly felt hollowed out. She had found her husband, yes—but her daughter, and her husband's master, were most likely gone. That plunge from joy to grief left her silent once more.

"Grandma Sun, the dead are long gone, and it all happened so many years ago. Don't dwell on it. Finding Uncle Qing again now is a blessing in the midst of misfortune, isn't it? If not for a chance turn of fate, you might never have met in this lifetime," Wei Zhao consoled her.

"Mm..." Grandma Sun nodded and sighed, feeling a little better. "So then... I was a cultivator once too, and of the Sun clan among the great houses?"

"Of course!" Uncle Qing nodded.

"But now I..." A trace of bewilderment appeared in Grandma Sun's eyes again. This feeling of remembering nothing was suffocating. She tried with all her might to recall the past—if she could remember it, then there might be things Uncle Qing did not know that she herself did: the whereabouts of her daughter and her master!

Had she never learned of these things, it would have been one matter; but now that she knew, Grandma Sun naturally longed with all her heart to know the answers.

She knitted her brows tightly, as if straining to recall something, but to no avail. "No. I still can't remember... I remember nothing. There are some vague impressions, but I don't know what they are..."

"Grandma Sun, are you trying to remember?" Wei Zhao asked.

"Yes. If I could recall what happened back then, perhaps there would be some clue to my daughter and my master, and I might even learn a little about our enemies..." Grandma Sun said with a nod.

"Grandma Sun, let me examine you and see." Wei Zhao had not known what she wanted before. Though he was willing to help, if Grandma Sun did not wish to remember that tragic past, then naturally he would not meddle.

For to anyone, it was no happy thing; it would only make one more gloomy and more sorrowful.

But Grandma Sun clearly did want to remember what had happened back then and find some clues, so Wei Zhao would naturally think of a way to help and take a look.
